The power spectrum analysis of spectral fluctuations in complex wave and quantum systems has emerged as a useful tool for studying their internal dynamics. In this paper, we formulate a nonperturbative theory of the power spectrum for complex systems whose eigenspectra -not necessarily of the randommatrix-theory (RMT) type -posses stationary level spacings. Motivated by potential applications in quantum chaology, we apply our formalism to calculate the power spectrum in a tuned circular ensemble of random N × N unitary matrices. In the limit of infinite-dimensional matrices, the exact solution produces a universal, parameter-free formula for the power spectrum, expressed in terms of a fifth Painlevé transcendent. The prediction is expected to hold universally, at not too low frequencies, for a variety of quantum systems with completely chaotic classical dynamics and broken time-reversal symmetry. On the mathematical side, our study brings forward a conjecture for a double integral identity involving a fifth Painlevé transcendent. We study a class of holomorphic matrix models. The integrals are taken over middle dimensional cycles in the space of complex square matrices. As the size of the matrices tends to infinity, the distribution of eigenvalues is given by a measure with support on a collection of arcs in the complex planes. We show that the arcs are level sets of the imaginary part of a hyperelliptic integral connecting branch points.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, reference adde
We consider the random normal matrices with quadratic external potentials where the associated orthogonal polynomials are Hermite polynomials and the limiting support (called droplet) of the eigenvalues is an ellipse. We calculate the density of the eigenvalues near the boundary of the droplet up to the second subleading corrections and express the subleading corrections in terms of the curvature of the droplet boundary. From this result we additionally get the expected number of eigenvalues outside the droplet. We also obtain the asymptotics of the kernel and found that, in the bulk, the correction term is exponentially small. This leads to the vanishing of certain Cauchy transform of the orthogonal polynomial in the bulk of the droplet up to an exponentially small error.
We present a nonperturbative analysis of the power spectrum of energy level fluctuations in fully chaotic quantum structures. Focusing on systems with broken time-reversal symmetry, we employ a finite-N random matrix theory to derive an exact multidimensional integral representation of the power spectrum. The N→∞ limit of the exact solution furnishes the main result of this study-a universal, parameter-free prediction for the power spectrum expressed in terms of a fifth Painlevé transcendent. Extensive numerics lends further support to our theory which, as discussed at length, invalidates a traditional assumption that the power spectrum is merely determined by the spectral form factor of a quantum system.
