The case method is one of the methods of problem learning, which allows, based on the description of the problem, to organize the learning process in order to develop a number of universal skills and foreign language speech skills of students. The history of the case method, the typology of cases, the didactic and linguodidactic potential of the case method are described. Based on the analysis of scientific literature, we distinguish the following typological features: a) the complexity of the case; b) the purpose and objectives of the case; c) the degree of structuredness; d) the volume of the case; e) the presence of the plot; f) temporary space; g) subjectivity; h) dominant type of activity; i) subject-content area; j) the number of participants; k) language of the project. The work describes in detail the types of cases for each type. The case method has a didactic potential, allowing to develop analytical skills, critical thinking, professional creative thinking, practical skills, communication skills, social and reflexive skills. When teaching a foreign language on the basis of foreign language cases of a general cultural or professionally oriented direction, students will be able to develop productive (speaking and writing) and receptive (listening and reading) types of speech activity. A nomenclature of speech skills developed in the process of using the case method for each type of speech activity is presented.
The work is devoted to identifying and substantiating the list of pedagogical conditions for teaching foreign language intercultural interaction of students based on the case method. At the present stage, the case method is one of the modern methods of problem learning, based on the students’ analysis of specific situations. The case method can be used in the development of the skills of foreign language intercultural interaction of students. However, in order to achieve the ef-fectiveness of the proposed teaching methods, it is necessary to identify and substantiate a number of pedagogical conditions. Based on the analysis of pedagogical and methods literature on the use of distance and information and communication technologies in foreign language teaching, as well as methods and approaches to teaching foreign language intercultural interaction of students, a list of such conditions is proposed. There are four of them: a) students’ proficiency in a foreign language at the B1 level and above; b) the ability and readiness of a foreign language teacher to draw up cases aimed at developing the skills of intercultural interaction; c) the ability and readiness of students for collective interaction in the process of completing cases; d) sequential execution of the stages of the cases. The work provides a detailed description of each of the pedagogical conditions.
One of the methods of problem learning is the case method. It consists in the fact that students are invited to study a specific problem and are invited to discuss and identify ways to solve it. The case method was originally developed for the training of lawyers and economists, and relatively recently began to be used in foreign language teaching. We briefly review the history of the development of the case method, analyze and summarize research on the organization of project work of students on the basis of modern pedagogical and information-communication technologies, and on the basis of this analysis, stages and detailed steps for using the case method are proposed in teaching students foreign language intercultural communication. There are three such stages: organizational, procedural and evaluative. Within each of the stages, several steps are proposed: 1) immersion in project activities based on the case method; 2) discussion of information security issues; 3) acquaintance with the materials of the case; 4) discussion of case materials; 5) search and study of additional sources for describing the problem and ways to solve it; 6) dis-cussion of case materials and development of a decision on it; 7) presentation of the solution for the case; 8) self-assessment of students and assessment of their teamwork on the case; 9) reflec-tion. We describe in detail the functions of the teacher and students at each stage.
Development of foreign language intercultural interaction skills is one of the main goals of foreign language teaching to students of the “Pedagogical Education” (profile “English Language”) programme. At the same time, the content of teaching foreign language intercultural interaction is the subject of discussion in the scientific literature. In this study we present the history of the problem of formulating the goals of foreign language teaching, consider several models of foreign language communicative competence and intercultural competence. As a result, a list of inter-cultural skills is generalized, the development of which will be able to prepare students for inter-cultural interaction in various situations characterized by both “dialogue of cultures” and “non-dialogue of cultures”. These skills include: a) acting as an initiator of intercultural interaction; b) support for intercultural dialogue in the spirit of peace to achieve communication goals; c) the development of critical thinking skills in relation to the interpretation of facts, information, reali-ties from the standpoint of ethnorelativism; d) acting as a intermediary or mediator between representatives of different cultures, with the leveling of intercultural contradictions, respect for representatives of contacting cultures; e) a way out of the situation of intercultural conflict; f) suppression of intercultural conflicts; g) finding agreement in intercultural conflicts.
