Si l’idée de soin se concrétise par une attitude, une parole et un geste bienveillants, les personnages la mettant en œuvre paraissent au cours de l’histoire animés d’idéaux variés. Certes, leur dénomination, leur statut et leur rôle ne sont pas toujours décrits avec précision ; mais leur intervention se trouve liée à des exigences morales et scientifiques fécondées par des représentations collectives. Ainsi, après la noblesse de l’accueil de l’étranger errant, appauvri et valétudinaire, relaté par les récits homériques et bibliques, apparaît l’organisation professionnelle plus ou moins protégée au nom de la cité grecque puis romaine. S’impose ensuite l’image du Christ souffrant où se lit la détresse du malade ; elle constituera le moteur de la charité due à ce dernier, dont les manifestations prolifèrent au Moyen Âge. Cependant, en raison de la nécessaire prophylaxie face aux épidémies qu’accentuèrent les occasions croissantes de guerre et de voyage, s’instaure petit à petit une organisation institutionnelle de plus en plus complexe liée à des considérations techniques et politiques. Plus précisément, dans les deux derniers siècles, l’agitation sociale porteuse d’aspiration à la salubrité publique et à la sécurité des personnes sous-tendra des idéaux républicains de liberté, de solidarité et d’expression individuelle. Ce à quoi répond de nos jours le devoir des soignants - officiellement reconnus comme « professionnels de santé » - d’assurer des conditions favorables à l’éclosion des sentiments de réconfort, d’épanouissement et d’estime. Autant par la sollicitude et l’écoute qu’ils assurent que par les actes techniques qu’ils exécutent, ils participent en fait à la mise en œuvre d’une distribution des richesses communes. La santé et l’accueil des plus démunis constituent ainsi, grâce à leur intervention réfléchie, les balbutiements d’une politique de citoyenneté active.
