Medical records of 80 dogs diagnosed with acute pancreatitis during a 4-year period were evaluated regarding history, breed predilection, clinical signs and additional examination findings. Cases were selected if compatible clinical symptoms, increased serum activity of amylase or lipase and morphologic evidence of pancreatitis by ultrasonography, laparotomy or necropsy were all present. Like in other studies, neutered dogs had an increased risk of developing acute pancreatitis. Although breed predilection was consistent with earlier reports, some notable differences were also observed. Apart from Dachshunds, Poodles, Cocker Spaniels and Fox Terriers, the sled dogs (Laikas, Alaskan Malamutes) also demonstrated a higher risk for pancreatitis according to our results. Concurrent diseases occurred in 56 dogs (70%), diabetes mellitus (n = 29, 36%) being the most common. Clinical signs of acute pancreatitis were similar to those observed in other studies. The study group represented a dog population with severe acute pancreatitis, having a relatively high mortality rate (40%) compared to data of the literature. Breed, age, gender, neutering and body condition had no significant association with the outcome. Hypothermia (p = 0.0413) and metabolic acidosis (p = 0.0063) correlated significantly with poor prognosis and may serve as valuable markers for severity assessment in canine acute pancreatitis.
Abstract. Argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) counts in cytologic and histologic lymph node samples from healthy dogs and dogs with lymphoma were compared. Control samples were taken from 10 Beagle dogs (six female and four male dogs, 1.5-2 years), and lymphoma samples were taken from 16 dogs. Cytologic samples were obtained by fine-needle aspiration and impression and histologic samples by excision or incisional biopsy. Altogether, 26 cytologic, 19 excisional, and 7 incisional biopsy samples were examined. Lymph nodes of controls showed a moderate inflammatory pattern; of the lymphoma cases, nine were lowgrade forms and seven were high-grade forms. Mean AgNOR counts per nucleus were determined. AgNOR counts were statistically different (P Ͻ 0.001) between controls and lymphoma cases in cytologic (1.35 and 3.59, respectively) and histologic (1.4 and 2.89, respectively) samples. In lymphoma cases, AgNOR counts in cytologic samples were higher than those in histologic samples by 0.81 (P Ͻ 0.001) and showed a linear relationship (r ϭ 0.6; P Ͻ 0.05) with the histologic counterparts in excisional biopsy samples. AgNOR counts in low-and high-grade lymphomas were significantly different (P Ͻ 0.05) in cytologic (3.21 and 4.08, respectively) and histologic (2.68 and 3.18, respectively) samples. In conclusion, AgNOR counts were higher in lymph nodes with lymphoma than in reactive nodes. In the case of dogs with lymphoma, AgNOR counts in cytologic samples were linearly related to excisional but not to incisional biopsy samples. Although AgNOR counts were different between cytologic and histologic samples, either sample type provided enough sensitivity to differentiate between high-and low-grade forms of lymphoma.
The nematode Spirocerca lupi (Rudolphi 1809) is widely distributed, classically causing parasitic nodules in the esophagus, aortic aneurysms and spondylitis. Clinical signs of infection are regurgitation, vomiting, weight loss, coughing, dyspnea and, rarely, sudden death. This retrospective study (2007 -2016) investigated the prevalence and treatment outcome of Hungarian dogs with esophageal spirocercosis presented at the Endoscope Laboratory of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest (ELUVMBP). The change in the annual number of cases/upper gastrointestinal endoscopies (UGIE) and cases/ total number of endoscopies (TNE, the entire case load of ELUVMBP), and the efficacy of different treatment methods were examined. In the time period mentioned above, a total of 30 patients referred for UGIE were diagnosed with spirocercosis. The annual case numbers significantly increased in comparison to both the number of UGIEs (P = 0.0085) and TNEs (P = 0.0096). The annual distribution of cases does not differ significantly from an even distribution (P = 0.1589). The occurrence of members of the Pasteurellaceae and Neisseriaceae families was studied in dogs and cats. A total of 110 nasal and pharyngeal swab samples from 47 dogs and 8 cats were collected. Most of the strains were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing, except Frederiksenia canicola and Pasteurella multocida where species-specific polymerase chain reactions were applied. The most frequently isolated species was F. canicola, which occurred only in dogs, mainly in the pharyngeal cavity. The second commonest bacterium, P. multocida was found in both types of samples and in both hosts. Other species from the family Pasteurellaceae, such as Haemophilus haemoglobinophilus, Pasteurella canis and P. dagmatis, were detected only in dogs. All isolated species belonging to the family Neisseriaceae, mainly representing Neisseria weaveri, were found only in the pharyngeal cavity. Neisseria weaveri and N. zoodegmatis could be detected in both hosts. Neisseria dumasiana and N. canis were isolated from dogs, while N. shayeganii only from a cat. For phylogenetic analysis, rpoB gene sequencing was performed, where the strains were on monophyletic branches and clearly separated from each other. In this study, recently described species such as F. canicola, N. shayeganii and N. dumasiana were detected that had never been isolated in Hungary before.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression pattern of claudin-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7, -8, -10 and -18 in the intact fundic and pyloric gastric mucosa of dogs. Intense, linear, membranous claudin-18 positivity was detected in the surface gastric cells and in the epithelial cells of the gastric glands both in the fundic and pyloric stomach regions. The mucous neck cells in the apical part of the glands, furthermore the parietal cells and chief cells of the basal part of the gland were all positive for claudin-18, in the same way as the enteroendocrine cells. Cells of the basal part of the pyloric glands showed intense, linear, membranous claudin-2 positivity, but cells of the superficial portion of these glands and the surface gastric cells in this region were claudin-2 negative. Fibroblasts, endothelial cells, lymphocytes of the propria layer, smooth muscle cells and vegetative neurons were all negative for claudin-2. All gastric epithelial cells were negative for claudin-1, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7, -8 and -10. The endothelial cells of the propria layer had intense claudin-5 positivity. We assume that claudin-18 forms a paracellular barrier against gastric acid in the healthy canine stomach, in the same way as in mice.
