Since October 2013 a convective-scale weather prediction model has been used operationally to provide short-term forecasts covering large parts of the Nordic region. The model is now operated by a bilateral cooperative effort [Meteorological Cooperation on Operational Numerical Weather Prediction (MetCoOp)] between the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute. The core of the model is based on the convection-permitting Applications of Research to Operations at Mesoscale (AROME) model developed by Météo-France. In this paper the specific modifications and updates that have been made to suit advanced high-resolution weather forecasts over the Nordic regions are described. This includes modifications in the surface drag description, microphysics, snow assimilation, as well as an update of the ecosystem and surface parameter description. Novel observation types are introduced in the operational runs, including ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations and radar reflectivity data from the Norwegian and Swedish radar networks. After almost two years’ worth of experience with the AROME-MetCoOp model, the model’s sensitivities to the use of specific parameterization settings are characterized and the forecast skills demonstrating the benefit as compared with the global European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ Integrated Forecasting System (ECMWF-IFS) are evaluated. Furthermore, case studies are provided to demonstrate the ability of the model to capture extreme precipitation and wind events.

HarmonEPS is the limited-area, short-range, convection-permitting ensemble prediction system developed and maintained by the HIRLAM consortium as part of the shared ALADIN–HIRLAM system. HarmonEPS is the ensemble realization of HARMONIE–AROME, used for operational short-range forecasting in HIRLAM countries. HarmonEPS contains a range of perturbation methodologies to account for uncertainties in the initial conditions, forecast model, surface, and lateral boundary conditions. This paper describes the state of the system at the version labeled cycle 40 and highlights some directions for further development. The different perturbation methods available are evaluated and compared where appropriate. Several institutes have operational or preoperational implementations of HarmonEPS, such as MEPS (Finland, Norway, and Sweden), COMEPS (Denmark), IREPS (Ireland), KEPS (the Netherlands), AEMET-γSREPS (Spain), and RMI-EPS (Belgium), and these systems are briefly described and compared with the ensemble prediction system (IFS ENS) from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

We studied the use of IASI data to improve the forecasts of extreme weather events in the Arctic region. For this purpose, the HARMONIE/Norway regional model was used. A set of 366 IASI channels was initially chosen from the ECMWF archived database. Active channels showing the best fit with the analysis system were selected by applying a multi-step monitoring technique. The IASI data were assimilated together with most of the available conventional and operational satellite observations using a three-dimensional variational data assimilation system. Four experiments with cyclic assimilations and subsequent 48-hour forecasts were performed during the IPY-THORPEX campaign period to evaluate the impact of the IASI data and the campaign observations on the hydrostatic HARMONIE/Norway analyses and forecasts.The assessment of the degrees of freedom for signals on the analysis showed that incorporating the IASI data in the assimilation system improved the contribution of the other observations. The utilization of an energy norm-based approach proved the sensitivity of the forecasts to the IASI channels in cases dominated by dynamic instabilities leading to quickly developing weather systems like, for example, polar lows.Comparison of the HARMONIE/Norway forecasts against independent observations and the ECMWF analyses showed a clear positive impact of the IASI data on geopotential fields in mid-troposphere and in the troposphere in general, respectively. We found small but significant positive impact on the temperature and humidity in the lower troposphere.A case-study showed positive impact of IASI radiances on the analysis and forecasts of a polar low. The impact on the forecasts lasted up to 24 hours when extra in situ campaign data were excluded from the analysis, and up to 36 hours when the campaign data were assimilated together with the IASI radiances.

In the Arctic, weather forecasting is one element of risk mitigation, helping operators to have knowledge on weather-related risk in advance through forecasting capabilities at time ranges from a few hours to days ahead. The operational numerical weather prediction is an initial value problem where the forecast quality depends both on the quality of the forecast model itself and on the quality of the specified initial state. The initial states are regularly updated using environmental observations through data assimilation. This paper assesses the impact of observations, which are accessible through the global telecommunication and the EUMETCast dissemination systems on analyses and forecasts of an Arctic limited area AROME (Application of Research to Operations at Mesoscale) model (AROME-Arctic). An assessment through the computation of degrees of freedom for signals on the analysis, the utilization of an energy norm-based approach applied to the forecasts, verifications against observations, and a case study showed similar impacts of the studied observations on the AROME-Arctic analysis and forecast systems. The AROME-Arctic assimilation system showed a relatively high sensitivity to the humidity or humidity-sensitive observations. The more radiance data were assimilated, the lower was the estimated relative sensitivity of the assimilation system to different conventional observations. Data assimilation, at least for surface parameters, is needed to produce accurate forecasts from a few hours up to days ahead over the studied Arctic region. Upper-air conventional observations are not enough to improve the forecasting capability over the AROME-Arctic domain compared to those already produced by the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecast). Each added radiance data showed a relatively positive impact on the analyses and forecasts of the AROME-Arctic. The humidity-sensitive microwave (AMSU-B/MHS) radiances, assimilated together with the conventional observations and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI)-assimilated on top of conventional and microwave radiances produced enough accurate one-day-ahead forecasts of polar low.
