The relation between the exchange current for electrolytic hydrogen evolution and the ability of the electrode to adsorb atomic hydrogen is discussed. This relation is qualitatively the same for the three accepted partial reactions; io passes through a maximum for metals adsorbing hydrogen moderately. Once this relation is established the complete current-voltage curve can be calculated for a metal, given the standard free energy of adsorption of hydrogen upon it.* We abandon the meaningless term " electrochemical " for this reaction and replace it by a descriptive term, also avoiding personal names for these reactions since these involve vexed questions of priority.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
