SUMMARYThis study details information about physical, chemical and mechanical properties, drying, preservation and workability of wood from Cordia alliodora, Dipteryx panamensis, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Hieronyma alchorneoides, Samanea saman and Vochysia ferruginea trees, growing in forest plantations in Costa Rica. Variation of the general properties in relation to height showed that heartwood percentage decreases, bark percentage increases and pith percentage is not affected. Dipteryx panamensis showed both the highest values for specific gravity and the highest mechanic resistance. Both chemical properties and extractives presence were different among species. Heartwood was not possible to preserve in any of the species, though sapwood was. Penetration varied from partial irregular or vascular in the species. The highest durability was for Hieronyma alchorneoides and Vochysia ferruginea, species classified as of high durability. Finally, all species had good performance in the workability tests. The previous results indicate that these species, used for trading reforestation in Costa Rica, have acceptable characteristics to be commercialized and used in wooden products.Key words: tropical species, Central America, wood variation, commercial wood. RESUMENEl presente estudio detalla información de las propiedades físicas, químicas, mecánicas, de secado, preservación y trabajabilidad de la madera de Cordia alliodora, Dipteryx panamensis, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Hieronyma alchorneoides, Samanea saman y Vochysia ferruginea proveniente de plantaciones forestales en Costa Rica. La variación de las propiedades con respecto a la altura mostró que el porcentaje de duramen disminuyó, el porcentaje de corteza aumentó y el porcentaje de médula no se vio afectado por la altura del árbol. Dipteryx panamensis presentó los valores de peso específico más altos, por lo tanto, también presentó los valores de resistencia mecánica más altos. No fue posible preservar el duramen en ninguna especie, pero la albura sí y su penetración varió de parcial irregular o vascular en las especies. La mayor durabilidad se presentó en Hieronyma alchorneoides y Vochysia ferruginea, especies clasificadas como de alta durabilidad. Finalmente, todas las especies presentaron buen comportamiento en las pruebas de trabajabilidad. Los resultados anteriores indican que estas especies, utilizadas en la reforestación comercial de Costa Rica, poseen características aceptables para ser utilizadas en la comercialización y uso en productos de madera.

Pellets may be produced with different types of agriculture or forestry crops in Costa Rica. This work evaluated the energy, physical, and mechanical properties of pellets fabricated from 12 types of agricultural and forestry crops (Ananas cumosos, Arundo donax, Coffea arabica, Cupressus lusitanica, empty fruit bunch and oil palm mesocarp fiber of the fruit of Elaeis guineensis, Gynerium sagittatum, Pennisetum purpureum, Phyllostachys aurea, Saccharum officinarum, Sorghum bicolor, and Tectona grandis), and similarities among these crops were established by multivariate principal component analysis. High variation was found in the pellet properties. The energy evaluation revealed that C. lusitanica and P. aurea are the crops with the best qualities for fuel use because of their high calorific values (from 16807 kJ/kg and 19919 kJ/kg, respectively) and low ash content (1.03% and 3.39%, respectively). As for physical properties, most crops exhibited values within the range noted by several authors and standards. All 12 pellet crops displayed high durability (from 72.12% to 92.98%) and compression force (from 295.18 N to 691.86 N). Moreover, the evaluation of crop similarities allowed the determination of four group combinations. Within these groups, C. lusitanica, P. aurea, and G. sagittatum had similar energy qualities and the best caloric characteristics.

a b s t r a c tThe use of the X-ray technique and the X-ray densitometry to determine pellet particle distribution and to understand the biomass compaction and its effects in pellet properties has been limited. The present work evaluates the quality of pellets manufactured with several lignocellulosic materials by using X-ray photography for studying surface cracks and irregularities, and by using X-ray densitometry to evaluate density and its variation in longitudinal and transversal directions. Density values and their variation were correlated to the pellets' mechanical properties (mechanical durability and compression resistance). It was found that X-ray photography may be applied to evaluate the presence of cracks and irregularities in the pellets' surface; however, these are not indicators of pellet durability or compression resistance. Moreover, density evaluation by the X-ray densitometry technique allowed the determination of the pellets' mechanical resistance and durability. A negative correlation was observed between the force at break and the coefficient of variation of density. No correlation was found between the mechanical durability and the average density or its variation. According to the above results, X-ray technique can be utilized to study the pellet quality.

: The heterogeneity of color distribution between sapwood and heartwood limits the market for wood from fast-growth plantations of tropical species. Wood color is associated with wood extractives contents. This study presents the relationship between wood color parameters measured by the CIELab color system and total amount of extractives and phenolic-type extractives in ethanol-toluene and hot water extracts of wood from two fast-growth plantation species. The results demonstrated that the difference in sapwood and hardwood color in Vochysia guatemalensis and Acacia mangium is caused by lower concentrations of extractives in sapwood of both species. Additionally, variations in total extractive and phenolic content have different effects on the color parameters (L*, a* and b*) of both species studied. In Vochysia guatemalensis wood, parameter L* decreases as total extractive and phenolic content increases; however, parameter a* increases as the content of extractives and phenols increases. In Acacia mangium, the amount of phenols showed no relationship with the color parameters. The ethanol-toluene total extractive content, however, shows a relationship with several color parameters. An increase in the content of total extractives in water and ethanol-toluene increases parameter a*, but decreases parameter L*.

Comparative study on physical and mechanical properties of laminated veneer lumber and plywood panels made of wood from fast-growing Gmelina arborea trees Abstract Laminated products, such as laminated veneer lumber (LVL) or plywood (PW), have become important recently. The objective of this study was to determine and compare properties of panels fabricated with veneers of Gmelina arborea trees in a fast-growth plantation and glued with phenol formaldehyde resin. The results showed that LVL and PW physical and mechanical properties are comparable to those of solid wood with a specify gravity of 0.60. Moreover, these panels can be cataloged into group 2 of PS 1-95 of the Voluntary Products Standard of the United States. The difference in physical properties was not statistically signifi cant between LVL and PW panels, except for water absorption. Some mechanical properties, such as hardness and glue-line shear, modulus of rupture in perpendicular fl exure, nail and screw withdrawal parallel, and perpendicular strength, were statistically different between LVL and PW. However, no differences were established for the modulus of elasticity, tensile strength parallel to the surface, or tensile strength perpendicular to the surface. The differences were attributed to the venners' orientation in the panels studied.
