Changing career experiences of professional engineers and scientists were examined in 1967 (tt = 290) and 1969 (w = 90). Both age and seniority were related to (a) amount of various needs, (b) aspirations for needs, (c) importance of needs, (d) satisfaction with needs, (c) the self-image, (f) organizational climate, (g) job challenge, (h) job involvement, (i) intrinsic motivation, (j) perceived performance, and (k) perceived effort. On the basis of these correlations, one-way analyses of variance between each variable and the different age groups, and rank orders for different age groups, it was concluded that career stages (early, middle, and late) did exist with different variables characterizing different stages. Implications of these career stages are discussed. The concept of career suggests the idea of ogy, sociology, and organizational behavior, lange and development over time. The term is typically used to refer both to changes in the positions which a person occupies and to changes in the personal characteristics of the individual which are associated with occupation of these positions. A study of 82 business organizations provides data on the disputed question of whether organization technology or organization size is more closely associated with the elements of organization structure. Technological variables are found to be associated with structure in certain definable respects, but, on the whole, size enjoys a much higher relationship. Partial correlational analysis serves to clarify these patterns of association. Measures of technology used in previous studies are seen to be problematic for two reasons. They can obscure the differential elements involved in technology. Secondly, they may to an important degree be acting as surrogates for inter-industry differences which include the influence of industrial managerial ideologies and environments.
