The present article is a case study of the various roles museums play for World Heritage Sites, focusing on the Roman Frontier (also known as Limes). The first section will describe the historical background of the Roman Frontier along the River Rhine. The Interpretation Frameworks and their application in museums using storylines will then be explained and an overview of the initiatives and the cultural infrastructure along the former Roman frontier in the Netherlands and Germany will be given. Finally, we will address cooperation between Dutch and German authorities in the World Heritage Site nomination process, as well as the role ICOM can play in promoting World Heritage Sites in general.
