A partir da hipótese de que o cinema estaria apto a produzir uma escrita historiográfica própria, mediante seus recursos expressivos, este artigo investiga o lugar da diáspora africana na obra do realizador britânico John Akomfrah. À luz do cruzamento entre imagem e história formulado por Walter Benjamin, analiso os usos de imagens de arquivo que captam a experiência de membros das antigas colônias britânicas emigrados à Grã-Bretanha do pós-guerra no filme The Nine Muses (2010). Argumento que em Akomfrah os materiais de arquivo excedem a condição de registro circunscrito a dar testemunho do momento em que vieram a existir, revelando potências submersas na atualidade pós-colonial.
