Grazing supplementation: availability and quality x supplementation levels x performance ABSTRACT -The objective was to evaluate the results of supplementation in the dry season of the year and the possible interference of the forage availability and quality and level of supplementation on performance. The total DM and green dry matter pasture availability deferred for use in the dry season has an average of all experiments of 6,431 kg ha -1 and 2,173 kg ha -1 . The Brachiaria under grazing in the dry season have high levels of NDF, with an average of 74.50%, high levels of ADF, with an average of 44.19%, low levels of CP, with average of 5.59% and low levels of IVDM/O, with an average of 51.36%. In this sense, the diet taken by the animal usually presents higher crude protein and lower levels of NDF. On consumption in grazing, note that the intake reduction is limited by until the level of supplementation of 0.3% of body weight (BW) per day and when the consumption of supplement increases to levels above 0.3% of BW, the consumption of grass is low and that this decrease may be even greater when the supply of supplement is 0.8% of the BW. Supplementation of cattle provided larger gains than those receiving only mineral in the dry season. Must be guaranteed at least 4,500 kg DM total.ha -1 , 1,200 kg.ha -1 of green dry matter, offering 10 to 12% of the BW offorage DM and 6% of DM potentially digestible to ensure selectivity and earnings satisfactory individual without compromising the gain per area. A supplementation in the dry season in Brachiaria is biologically feasible for positive effect on weight gain, but the economic viability of the system is location dependent. Supplementation levels above 0.8% of the BW should be investigated as alternatives that may avoid possible negative effects on the rumen environment to reduce the expectations of gain, as the fractionation of supplementation.

RESUMO. Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho, o consumo e o coeficiente de digestibilidade na dieta de novilhas Nelore na fase de recria suplementada em pastejo durante a seca e transição seca/águas, sob ofertas de forragem. Foram utilizadas 84 novilhas, com aproximadamente 146 ± 21,37 kg de peso corporal (PC) médio, dividas em três tratamentos de acordo com as ofertas de forragem de 5, 10 e 20% do peso corporal. Os animais foram suplementados com 0,25% do PC utilizado-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância considerando 5% de probabilidade. Houve diferença para a disponibilidade de forragem na primeira coleta, quarta coleta e quinta coleta (p < 0,05). A utilização de ofertas variando de 5 a 20% não influenciaram a digestibilidade. A oferta de 10 e 20% foi capaz de suportar a carga animal exercida nelas durante o período experimental. Os consumos não apresentaram diferenças (p > 0,05). O melhor ganho médio diário foi para a oferta de forragem de 20% (0,37 kg dia ABSTRACT. Forage on offer for Nellore heifers supplemented during the drought and dry/rainy transition seasons. This study aimed to evaluate the performance, intake and digestibility coefficient in the diet of Nellore heifers in the rearing period supplemented in grazing during the drought and dry/rainy transition seasons under different forage allowances. A total of 84 heifers were used, with approximately 146 ± 21.37 kg body weight (BW), divided into three treatments according to forage on offer levels of 5, 10 and 20% of BW. The animals were supplemented with 0.25% of BW, using a completely randomized design. The data were subjected to analysis of variance at 5% probability. There was a difference for forage availability in the first, fourth and fifth collections (p < 0.05).The use of offerings ranging between 5-20% did not affect digestibility. The offers of 10 and 20% were able to withstand the stocking rate during the trial period. The intakes did not differ (p > 0.05). The average daily gain was best for the 20% forage allowance (0.37 kg day -1 ). Animals that received 10 and 5% forage showed better gains per area -150.56 and 216.41 kg ha -1 . In this context, the use of 5% forage allowance is recommended.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do suplemento com consumo de 0; 0,25; 0,50 e 0,75% do peso corporal (PC) de novilhos Nelore sobre o consumo, desempenho e digestibilidade aparente dos nutrientes no período seco. Foram utilizados 116 animais da raça Nelore, nãocastrados, com média de nove meses de idade e peso corporal de 168 ± 35 kg, com duração de 114 dias iniciando em 04 de agosto e finalizando em 25 de novembro de 2007. O delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e 29 repetições para o desempenho e cinco repetições para as avaliações de consumo e digestibilidade, mantidos em pastagem de Brachiaria brizantha diferida. Foram realizadas pesagens no início e final do período experimental. O consumo de MS da forragem apresentou efeito quadrático, com ponto de mínima de 0,4% PC, consumos de PB, CT e NDT aumentaram linearmente, GMD, GPT e peso corporal final apresentaram efeito quadrático, com o ponto de máxima ao redor de 0,60% do PC. O coeficiente de digestibilidade aparente da MS, MO, PB, CT, CNF e o valor de NDT demonstraram efeito linear crescente. Recomenda-se o fornecimento de suplemento até 0,60% PC, em que se obteve o ponto de máximo desempenho, e a digestibilidade apresentou efeito linear e o aumento das percentagens do suplemento proporcionou aumentos no consumo de nutrientes.
