The fruit of Prunus avium L., commonly known as sweet cherry, is an excellent source of phytochemicals, namely, phenolic compounds. This study aims to determine in vitro the bioavailability and the bioactivity of phenolic compounds present in cherries. Caco-2 cells were used, and the permeability and integrity of the monolayer formed were investigated. After incubation, the phenolic compounds that permeabilized the cell monolayer were quantified using a high-performance liquid chromatography−diode array detector, and the antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl method. The results demonstrated that the phenolic compounds of sweet cherries after undergoing a simulated digestion were absorbed by the cellular barrier, becoming bioavailable. Contrary to what was found after incubation with the in vitro digested extract, the integrity of the cell monolayer was altered and its permeability increased upon incubation with the sweet cherry phenolic extract. Regarding the antioxidant activity, it was verified that this decreased after the absorption by the cellular monolayer. This study suggests that digestion is an indispensable process for absorption because without it the phenolic content of the food matrix does not become bioaccessible.

Resumo: Através da demanda e da organização de estudantes do curso de Agronomia da Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul -UFFS campus Cerro Largo -RS, desenvolveu-se o grupo de estudos denominado Grupo de Agroecologia Noroeste Missões (GANOM), com o intuito de abordar mais amplamente a epistemologia do pensamento agroecológico e sua inserção no ensino, pesquisa e extensão na universidade. O foco principal do grupo são as abordagens agroecológicas nos sistemas de produção adotados pela agricultura familiar. O objetivo deste artigo é relatar as experiências do GANOM, desde sua criação no ano de 2013 até o ano de 2016, com o intuito de divulgar experiências e incentivar iniciativas semelhantes em outras instituições. As reuniões do grupo são quinzenais e ampliam a capacidade analítica da formação acadêmica, bem como estimulam a formação de um senso crítico acerca dos temas abordados. Além de uma abordagem teórica, os discentes do grupo colaboram na organização de eventos, participaram em monitorias, projetos de pesquisa e extensão que abordam a agroecologia como eixo estruturador da formação profissional. O grupo consolidou diversas parcerias com organizações e movimentos sociais do campo e da cidade, sendo que diversos métodos adotados pelo GANOM também são relatados por outros grupos de estudos.Palavras-chave: Extensão Universitária, Práticas Agroecológicas, Movimentos Sociais. Purpose Poultry agro-industry generates huge amounts of solid wastes, such as poultry litter (PL) and feathers. Feathers, possessing a substantial amount of organic nitrogen, are mainly converted into feather meal (FM) through the hydrothermal process; however, microbial conversion into feather hydrolysates (FH) is increasingly being focused on. Since waste management strategies include the use of organic wastes as soil fertilizer, PL, FM, and FH were evaluated as fertilizers for lettuce in comparison to urea. Methods Lettuce seedlings were transplanted to soil pots containing FH, obtained through feathers' bioconversion by Bacillus sp. CL18, FM, PL, urea, and unfertilized controls. Partial chemical characterization of FH, FP, and PL was performed. Fertilization treatments were applied to reach 180 kg N/ha. Growth, dry biomass, and chlorophyll contents of lettuce were evaluated to indicate fertilizer performance. Results After 60 days of greenhouse lettuce cultivation, leaves per plant were superior after FH treatment. Lettuce fertilized with urea and FH presented higher and similar foliar areas. FH treatment resulted in increased dry weight (DW) of leaves, which then decreased in the order urea > FM > MM ~ controls > PL. Dry weight of leaves and roots was 33% and 64% higher with FH than with urea. Leaf total chlorophyll content was higher with FH, but similar to urea and FM. Lettuce growth was negatively affected by PL when compared to controls. Conclusion FH, obtained from microbial processing of abundant and inexpensive feathers, could be a candidate N-rich fertilizer for lettuce cultivation.

Resumo: O movimento estudantil nacional absorveu diversas temáticas emergentes dos movimentos sociais que tendem a contrapor a hegemonia dos paradigmas convencionais, observada nas universidades e na sociedade. No tocante aos cursos de Agronomia, se observa uma tendência de temas referentes à agroecologia e a extensão universitária adentrarem os círculos de discussões entre estudantes, professores, profissionais e sociedade em geral. No presente artigo, conduz-se um relato da experiência da 16º edição do Encontro Regional dos Estudantes de Agronomia -EREA, estabelecendo uma discussão sobre os principais temas abordados no tocante à formação profissional de Agronomia. Considera-se a necessidade de ampliar a discussão acerca da formação de profissionais que consigam superar os limites e a problemática acerca da concepção hegemônica da Agronomia. Conclui-se que os encontros regionais dos estudantes de Agronomia consagram-se enquanto um espaço de diálogo e formação crítica dentro do conjunto do movimento estudantil nacional, contribuindo concomitantemente para o intercâmbio sociocultural entre estudantes de diferentes regiões, e a aproximação destes com a dinâmica dos movimentos sociais.

Extracellular soil enzymes are fundamental for the functioning of ecosystems. Several processes in the soil depend on the activity of these enzymes, including plant decomposition, soil organic matter formation/mineralization, and nutrient cycling. Moreover, extracellular enzyme activity occurs in the soil and is therefore influenced by environmental factors. Due to the high sensitivity to these factors, extracellular enzymes are used for monitoring soil quality. This review aimed to present the main contributions of soil enzymes to agriculture, emphasizing the dynamics of elements in the soil and the environmental factors that modulate enzyme activity. With this knowledge, the relationship of extracellular enzymes to soil quality is demonstrated and their use as a tool for soil monitoring. Finally, the evolution of research on soil enzymes in Brazil is presented, and the perspectives of basic and applied studies necessary to expand the knowledge and use of enzymes in soil management are pointed out. Soil enzymes play a key role in numerous soil processes, thereby making them useful indicators of productive capacity and soil quality. Research on enzymes in soil has developed significantly in the last two decades, which has made it possible for farmers to analyze and interpret enzyme activity in the soil in the laboratory.

O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar a germinação de sementes de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cultivar BRS Esteio, pré-embebidas em diferentes doses de um bioestimulante comercial, composto por 50 mg L-1 de ácido indolbutírico, 90 mg L-1 de cinetina e 50 mg L-1 de ácido giberélico. Os tratamentos adotados foram: 7,5 mL, 10 mL, 25 mL e 50 mL de bioestimulante por Kg de sementes e, um tratamento controle, com pré-embebição em água destilada estéril. Avaliou-se a germinação (%), índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG), comprimento médio da parte aérea (CMPA), comprimento médio das raízes (CMR), biomassa fresca da parte aérea (BFPA), biomassa seca da parte aérea (BSPA), biomassa fresca das raízes (BFR) e biomassa seca das raízes (BSR) das sementes germinadas. A dose de 10 mL kg-1 de semente apresentou a maior porcentagem de germinação (84%) e o maior IVG. O mesmo tratamento apresentou significativamente as maiores médias para CMPA, CMR, BFR e BSR. A BFPA e BSPA foram afetadas negativamente pela pré-embebição com bioestimulante. Conclui-se que a dose de 10 mL de bioestimulante por Kgde sementes resultou em maior porcentagem e velocidade de germinação, alongamento da parte aérea e das raízes e, incremento da biomassa fresca e seca das raízes, enquanto as diferentes dosagens de bioestimulante no tratamento de sementes de feijão proporcionaram decréscimo no acúmulo de biomassa fresca e seca da parte aérea nas sementes germinadas.
