Este artículo tiene como objetivo determinar la importancia de una planificación urbana que considere una movilidad activa de los niños a pie y en bicicleta. Tal planificación urbana debe tomar en cuenta las necesidades de recreación y actividad física saludable de los niños, que pueden tener incidencia directa en problemas como mantener un peso saludable. Los patrones de movilidad sostenible son necesarios ahora más que nunca para los niños que asisten a la escuela todos los días en un mundo que enfrentará nuevos y crecientes desafíos de salud pública. El estudio de caso para este artículo son los estudiantes de la Escuela Primaria Abraham Sánchez, quienes participaron en una investigación realizada en 2018 y que ahora, debido a las medidas sociales requeridas para contener la pandemia, adquieren una nueva relevancia y ponen en evidencia la necesidad de fomentar estos medios de movilidad y de replicarlos en otros entornos urbanos como un mecanismo de bajo riesgo para prevenir el contagio en circunstancias como la crisis recientemente experimentada.
