Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death of children up to five years old in the developing countries. Among the etiological diarrheal agents are atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC), one of the diarrheagenic E. coli pathotypes that affects children and adults, even in developed countries. Currently, genotypic and biochemical approaches have helped to demonstrate that some strains classified as aEPEC are actually E. albertii, a recently recognized human enteropathogen. Studies on particular strains are necessary to explore their virulence potential in order to further understand the underlying mechanisms of E. albertii infections. Here we demonstrated for the first time that infection of fragments of rat intestinal mucosa is a useful tool to study the initial steps of E. albertii colonization. We also observed that an E. albertii strain can translocate from the intestinal lumen to Mesenteric Lymph Nodes and liver in a rat model. Based on our finding of bacterial translocation, we investigated how E. albertii might cross the intestinal epithelium by performing infections of M-like cells in vitro to identify the potential in vivo translocation route. Altogether, our approaches allowed us to draft a general E. albertii infection route from the colonization till the bacterial spreading in vivo.
The Esclera SCL treatment had a positive impact on tear osmolarity and van Bijsterveld score, as well as an improvement in the patients' BCVA, dry eye symptoms, and quality of life.
The trigeminal artery is an anastomosis between the embryonic precursors of the vertebrobasilar and carotid systems, and may persist into adult life. The association of the persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PTA) with cerebral aneurysm is well documented in the literature and, in general, aneurysms are located in the anterior circulation. We describe a patient who presented with a panencephalic Fisher III subarachnoid hemorrhage due to rupture of an intracranial aneurysm. Digital arteriography showed a saccular aneurysm in the middle third of the basilar artery, adjacent to the junction with a persistent trigeminal artery. She was submitted to endovascular treatment with embolization of the basilar artery aneurysm with coils. Aneurysms at the PTA junction with the basilar artery are rare. This paper describes a case of PTA associated with an aneurysm in the basilar artery at PTA junction and briefly reviews the literature.
Objective: The objective of this study was to relate demographic variables and craniometric measures with measurements of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) at different points along the path of the SSS. The findings were then discussed with regards to theories of skull growth. Methods: We studied 33 skulls with known demographic characteristics and measured various craniometric parameters and distances related to the specific dimensions of the SSS. These data were statistically analyzed, and the results are presented. Results: Of the 33 cadaver samples, 16 were female and 17 were male, aged between 28 and 87 years at the time of death. The cross-sectional area of the SSS measured at the coronary suture was positively correlated with the biauricular length. In addition, when measured 1.5 cm above the torcula, the cross-sectional area of the SSS was negatively correlated with the distance between the medial epicanthi. Conclusions: The relationships found may indicate that the growth of the SSS is proportional to the activity of each segment of the SSS that occurs along its path.
Patients undergoing surgical treatment had better outcome than those submitted to conservative treatment, and patients who were more severe at admission (GCS 3-8) have better results with the neurosurgical procedure.
Traumatic posterior fossa epidural hematomas are uncommon lesions. Among these lesions, retroclival epidural hematomas (REDH) are particularly rare conditions that usually occur in the pediatric population due to predisposing anatomical features in this patient group. We describe a typical case of traumatic REDH from the mechanism of trauma to outcome. This 8-year-old girl was involved in a motor vehicle accident leading to whiplash cervical injury and cranial nerve palsy. Any children involved in a severe motor vehicle accident with such a sequence of events should raise suspicion for prompt diagnosis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
