ABSTRACTIn the Brazilian Amazon, riverside dwellers, fishermen, quilombolas, peasants and extractivists have historically had high rates of malnutrition and infectious diseases. On the other hand, the traditional way of life is considered to be protective against cardiovascular diseases. However, the socioeconomic relationship with urban centers has Brazilian Journal of Development Braz. 11291 promoted an increasing incorporation of industrialized products in the diet of rural populations, generating an increase in chronic disease rates. This article aims to expose, through a narrative review, the dangerous phenomenon of nutritional and epidemiological transition that the traditional non-indigenous communities of the Brazilian Amazon have been experiencing in recent decades. To stop this process, it is necessary to rethink the economic development model adopted in Brazil.
