O trabalho trata do desenvolvimento de um produto para utilização na indústria açucareira: um novo tipo de martelo do desfibrador para cana-de-açúcar, contendo em sua base material compósito metal/cerâmico, obtido diretamente no processo de fabricação. O processo empregado foi fundição em molde cheio, utilizando grânulos de WC oriundos da reciclagem de ferramentas de corte, e como metal base o ferro fundido nodular tipo FE 50007. Foram empregados diferentes teores e dimensões de grânulos de reforço. Foram investigados parâmetros de processo para a obtenção de uma camada não linear de reforço na base do martelo, isto é, na sua superfície de desgaste, constituindo uma camada gradativa de grânulos de WC. Os produtos obtidos foram caracterizados quanto à localização do elemento de reforço na peça, ao perfil e à distribuição dos grânulos de WC na sua base, à distribuição do reforço na superfície de desgaste, e macroestrutura e microestrutura em diferentes regiões do produto. Foram também avaliadas dureza e comportamento em abrasão da camada reforçada.Foram feitos ensaios de desgaste abrasivo em micro e macro escala. Os produtos obtidos foram ainda avaliados quanto ao desempenho em campo. Os resultados obtidos mostraram a possibilidade de obtenção de uma camada de espessura variável, da ordem a 8 a 30 mm na região de desgaste do martelo; as macro e microanálises mostraram interfaces entre metal e reforço gradativas, com ausência de imperfeições do tipo camadas de óxidos ou porosidade.Os ensaios de desgaste mostraram aumento significativo da resistência à abrasão, com redução da ordem de 7 vezes na perda de massa, em testes de microabrasão, com relação ao metal não reforçado, e de cerca de 60% com relação ao aço ferramenta AISI H13, em testes de macroabrasão. Em testes em campo, o comportamento se mostrou superior a martelos convencionais, com perda de massa da ordem de 32% inferior. O processo desenvolvido permitiu a fabricação de um novo produto, que, comparativamente a martelos convencionais fabricados em aços-C e revestidos com solda de alto Cr, se mostrou superior em desempenho e de menor custo.
