Multiple studies have analyzed the importance of preventive maintenance. Similarly, they have developed and/or evaluated various spare part inventory management policies that help companies reduce the duration of production disruptions resulting from sudden mechanical failures. All of these studies assess the impact of mechanical failures on local aspects, such as idle times or management policies. However, they do not holistically evaluate how machine failures affect key performance indicators. To address this gap, we proposed a System Dynamics (SD) model to systemically analyze the impact of machine part failures on order shipping, a key performance indicator. Similarly, we assessed the impact of machine part failures on the levels of the company’s finished goods inventory. The research was conducted in a glass bottle manufacturing company. To increase order shipping as a performance indicator, we identified the key variables of the production process and conducted a sensitivity analysis of the variables. Our results indicate that it is possible to reach the company’s 98–100% complete delivery policy.

Renewable energy (RE) is one of the areas where major research and development efforts are currently developing. Demand for electrical energy is increasing because of population growth and accelerated industrialization, particularly in developing countries like India and China. Traditional forms of energy generation produce large amounts of CO 2 , which adversely affects the environment. Renewable energies include solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower and biomass (BM), the latter being the option with the greatest potential for electricity generation in Mexico [1], which ranks 20th in the world in producing energy from BM. However, identifying regionally important types of BM to evaluate their energy potential, localities of conversion and demand, besides integration of the conventional electrical system, represents technological challenges in administration and control. This generates high logistics costs and the need for good supply chain planning (CS). The efficient management of CS of bioenergy and logistics for key processes (procurement, production and distribution), represents key issues [2]. According to some authors, a new trend has arisen; where it is not enough to compete between organizations; instead, the competition shifts towards the terms of CS of RE and traditional forms of energy generation. This paper presents the conceptual development of a bioenergy supply chain in Mexico, using system dynamics as a methodology for the design and evaluation of the supply chain, since this is a suitable approach to model and study the interaction between variables in a complex system by applying feedback loops [3].

One of the byproducts generated in the cane sugar production is molasses, which is used for ethanol distillation. However, one of the problems of distilleries is vinasse. Vinasse is highly water pollutant and is dumped untreated in lakes or rivers and damages the environment. The company FALA developed a pilot plant that uses vinasse to produce a type of livestock feed called MD60. In this paper, the impact of the pilot plant’s scale-up in the key processes of the company’s supply chain is analyzed. With the help of a sensitivity analysis, this study finds the values that would allow the company to improve its order fulfillment indicator and to increase profits, assuming an expected demand by the introduction of this new product into the market. The results show that (1) the pilot plant fulfills 32% of the orders, (2) according to the current vinasse storage capacity, it is possible to fulfill up to 77% of the orders by scaling up the pilot plant, (3) to satisfy 100% of the orders, it is necessary to use all the vinasse generated, and (4) the highest profit is reached by processing all the vinasse and by considering the upper sale price.
