O combate ao espiritismo no Brasil na virada do século XIX para o XX está permeado não somente por razões e motivações religiosas, mas fundamentalmente sociais e políticas. A ascensão da medicina psiquiátrica brasileira, concomitante ao próprio espiritismo, uniu-se ao contexto católico de crise pós-padroado no qual a Igreja não só deveria se desdobrar por recursos financeiros aquém do Estado como também no combate a seus adversários religiosos, que, por força de lei, agora eram oficialmente aceitos no país. Neste contexto, a união entre os discursos médico e católico contra um inimigo comum, o espiritismo, se tornou evidente quando se tratou da garantia da soberania de ambos como classe legitimamente portadora tanto da qualidade de verdadeira religião, quanto de verdadeira ciência. No entanto, em Goiás a ausência de uma classe médica forte deu ao catolicismo a possibilidade de ser o paladino deste combate, fazendo-o, de modo especial, na década de 1920, através do jornal Santuário da Trindade, editado em Campinas pela Congregação Redentorista. Em vistas disso, o presente artigo tem como objeto de análise o discurso de combate ao espiritismo pelo referido periódico católico, tomando como ponto de partida principal a união de seus argumentos religiosos com os argumentos médicos-psiquiátricos desenvolvidos em todo o Brasil nas primeiras décadas do século XX.
O século 19 pode ser descrito de maneiras absolutamente diferentes e divergentes. Se, por um lado, é considerado por Erick Hobsbawm como a “Era das Revoluções”, por outro, pode ser considerado também o “século da ciência, do racionalismo, do academicismo”. Do ponto de vista religioso, entretanto, o século 19 é também o século do ocultismo, das sociedades secretas, do espiritismo e ainda do reavivamento religioso cristão. É neste contexto tão divergente que se situa o presente artigo, cujo recorte se dá especificamente na Alemanha e toma como objeto o misticismo católico feminino. Ainda que seja pouco conhecido, o fenômeno do misticismo estigmata registrou, entre 1775 e 1900, pelo menos 130 casos apenas na Europa ocidental. Se estendermos este recorte até 1957, somam-se 221 casos, dentre os quais 212 (96%) são mulheres. Em face disso, nossa problemática de pesquisa se detém numa apresentação e apontamentos sobre três casos de mulheres místicas estigmatas alemãs do século 19 (Anna Katharina Emmerick, 1774-1824, Louise Beck, 1822-1879, e Viktoria Hecht, 1840-1890) no intuito de compreender de que forma as singularidades e generalidades dos seus casos representam uma resistência católica à consolidação da modernidade na Alemanha oitocentista. Como fundamentação propomos a revisão de uma extensa, importante e, no Brasil, pouco conhecida bibliografia sobre o tema, especialmente nas línguas inglesa e alemã. Como fontes, tomamos alguns conjuntos de publicações hagiográficas sobre os casos que tomamos por objeto, além de publicações de instituições responsáveis pela manutenção de sua memória.
A vinda da Ordem Redentorista para o estado de Goiás, em 1894, revela um contexto político, econômico e religioso peculiar vivido pelo estado, em que, com o fim do regime de padroado, o controle das romarias populares, tanto quanto das manifestações religiosas não-católicas, foram de fundamental importância para a manutenção da hegemonia católica local. O papel desempenhado pelos redentoristas em Goiás, tanto no controle da romaria de Trindade, quanto no combate às religiões e religiosidades não-católicas, teve importante reflexo na edição do jornal “Santuário da Trindade”, através do qual os religiosos incentivavam a participação popular na romaria, e, especialmente, intentavam a formação catequética dos fiéis católicos contra as “falsas religiões”. Este posicionamento redentorista diante das demais religiões, a partir do referido jornal, não condiz, no entanto, com as posições adotadas pelos religiosos da primeira geração, vinda ao estado em 1894, o que nos remete a mudanças significativas em sua postura política e religiosa que merecem ser interrogadas e investigadas. Destarte, o presente artigo objetiva uma análise histórica das mudanças de posicionamento da Ordem Redentorista em Goiás nas primeiras décadas do período pós-padroado, tomando como principal objeto de pesquisa o jornal “Santuário da Trindade”, publicado entre 1922 e 1931. O presente artigo tem como objeto de análise do movimento ultramontano europeu do século 19 e sua relação com a modernidade. Para tanto, proponho inicialmente uma abordagem conceitual da palavra “ultramontanismo” para em seguida analisar o movimento em seu contraste com outras tendências católicas e com os tumultuosos eventos históricos do século 19. Por fim, proponho uma análise da relação entre o ultramontanismo e a consolidação do mundo moderno na Europa oitocentista, bem como o modo como, a partir dele, o catolicismo representou uma tentativa insistente de retorno ao passado face ao avanço da modernidade.
