Scores on the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale obtained during a community mental health assessment survey in Kansas City, Missouri, were analyzed to determine differences in social desirability according to demographic characteristics. In addition, the relationships between social desirability and mental health measures are examined. Scores were found to differ on the basis of age, education, and race. Small but consistent inverse relationships between symptom reporting and social desirability were found. The implications of these findings for community studies are discussed.
