La actividad porcícola se ha convertido en una de las más importantes en el Estado de Yucatán, lo cual ha provocado un crecimiento acelerado en la población de cerdos. Las características naturales de la región la hacen muy vulnerable a la descarga de aguas residuales; lo anterior se aúna al aumento del número de animales en el estado y agrava los problemas por contaminación, especialmente del agua del manto freático. En este artículo se estudian la estructura del sector porcícola con relación a la generación de aguas residuales, la importancia de un manejo adecuado en el uso del agua en las granjas porcícolas y los factores que influyen en la cantidad del agua residual generada.
Se intenta explicar un comportamiento nacional de rendimientos crecientes en la escala productiva. El objetivo del trabajo consiste en estudiar y medir el impacto de la urbanización en el crecimiento económico de país. Se usaron, como principales líneas teóricas, las aportaciones del crecimiento endógeno, al cual, además de los principales factores de producción, capital y trabajo, se añade el elemento de externalidad. La principal aportación científica del texto se localiza en los estudios de economías de aglomeración, que explican la naturaleza y medición de las externalidades por medio de diferentes técnicas econométricas. Los datos usados en series de tiempo, para el caso de México, proporcionan una opción metodológica para realizar análisis de externalidades de forma agregada que no se habían llevado a cabo en las comunidades económicas nacional e internacional.
Este número 82 de Universidades, pasará a la historia como un hito en el devenir de la revista. Las razones son varias. En primer lugar, y de manera muy destacada, este número está dedicado a la celebración del septuagésimo aniversario de la fundación de la Unión de Universidades de América Latina y el Caribe (UDUAL). Setenta años de participación activa y militante en la vida universitaria de América Latina y el Caribe han convertido a la UDUAL en un referente universitario porque, no sólo ha sido un espacio de representación académica y política de las universidades e instituciones de educación superior, sino también y lo que es tal vez lo más valioso, porque ha propuesto y defendido valores universitarios que tienen una profunda pertinencia social. Se trata de setenta años de lucha en favor de la crítica, la pluralidad de ideas y opiniones y de vinculación de las universidades con la sociedad.
Antecedentes: A partir de un caso empírico se estudia la decisión de las personas para participar voluntariamente como funcionarios de casilla el día de la jornada electoral en México. Al respecto, interesaba analizar si esa participación era motivada por un comportamiento prosocial, donde el ciudadano contribuía a la existencia de un bien público: la democracia. De ser el caso, se descartaría el comportamiento de Homo Economicus. Métodos: Ante la falta de información para hacer este estudio a nivel individual, se decidió hacerlo a nivel más agregado, a nivel municipal. Por medio de una regresión logística se exploró la probabilidad de que un municipio tuviera una alta tasa de aceptación para participar en la jornada electoral como funcionarios de casilla. Específicamente, se estudió en qué medida la variable dependiente se explica por variables asociadas a un comportamiento prosocial o a un comportamiento de Homo Economicus. Resultados: Los resultados muestran que, efectivamente, una parte de la participación es motivada por la responsabilidad ciudadana y el compromiso social, es decir, un comportamiento divergente del Homo Economicus. En tanto que la otra parte de la participación responde a incentivos no explícitos que estarían asociados al self-interest. Conclusiones: En este artículo se concluye que una parte de quienes aceptan la invitación para participar como funcionarios de casilla, lo hacen respondiendo a un comportamiento prosocial, pero para el resto no es posible descartar un comportamiento de Homo Economicus. Todo ello apunta a la necesidad de seguir trabajando para consolidar la calidad de la democracia mexicana.
