Los precios externos de los bienes que entran en el comercio exterior y la politica comercial externa son los determinantes fundamentales del tipo de cambio real considerados en los modelos economicos mas comunmente utilizados. No es tan com(un encontrar que esos modelos postulen la existencia de efectos de las politicas macroeconomicas sobre este precio relativo clave de la economia. Sin embargo, estimaciones de ecuaciones de tipo de cambio real realizadas para la Argentina por Cavallo (1986), Cavallo y Garcia (1985), Mundlak, Cavallo y Domenech (1987), han encontrado que las politicas macroeconomicas juegan un rol importante.Este trabajo tiene por objeto examinar el vinculo entre las politicas macroeconomicas y el tipo de cambio real. Para ello se presenta el modelo teorico subyacente y los resultados obtenidos en la estimacion de una ecuacion para la Argentina en el periodo 1913-1984. Finalmente, se indagan cuales hubieran sido las trayectorias del tipo de cambio real si a partir de 1930 la Argentina hubiera seguido manteniendo una politica de amplia integracion con los mercados mundiales y se hubieran aplicado politicas macroeconomicas mas estables y consistentes.
