Personal coping strategies and organizational social support, which may act as buffers to decrease job stress, have been studied to a lesser extent. It is difficult to study one of these factors without the other, as personal coping strategies are used during work time and organizational social support affects the individual in the work setting and during "off time." Objective 6.11 of Healthy People 2000 is to "increase to at least 40% the proportion of worksites employing 50 or more people that provide programs to reduce employee stress" (USDHHS, 1991). One first has to explore the needs and concerns of the work force prior to designing or implementing stress reduction programs. One action proposed to advance this objective is to investigate job redesign and organizational changes that have the potential to reduce stress in major occupations.
