This paper emphasizes some characteristics of television which are important considerations when editing surgical videotapes. Some of the ways in which television can specifically aid learning are stressed as is the need for an understanding of a surgical procedure as a prerequisite for preparing such a video. The method of tackling the task, including both technical procedures and considerations of aesthetics, is described.
