Man wird GOETI-IEs Lebenswerk nur gereeht dureh Betraehtung seiner iiberragenden PersSnliehkeit yon versehiedenem Standpunkte; vereinigt doeh seine Universalitiit den Diehter mit dem Philosophen, mit dem Kiinstler und dem Naturforseher. Im Mittelpunkte seines Sehaffens steht der Menseh, dessen Wesen und Sehieksale er beobaehtete nnd diehteriseh gestaltete. Er sah und sehilderte seine Mensehen in engster Verbindung mit ihrer Umwelt. Charakterbildung und Sehicksal stehen bei GOETHE in innigster Weehselwirkung mit den i~ul]eren Lebensverhiiltnissen und der umgebenden Natur; Gemiitsstimmung und Naturauffassung sind in ]ebendigem Zusammenhange. Von dieser dichterisehen, dem Leben abgelauschten Verkntipfung zwischen Menseh und Natur ist nut ein Schritt zur Erforsehung der Natur selbst. Wie GOETHE alle Regungen des menschlichen Herzens aus eigener Erfahrung schilderte, trachtete er auch, die vie]fiiltigen Geheimnisse der Natur zu entr~tseln. Von der Oberfliiche des Landschaftsbildes, dem ,,Spiegel der Seele", drang er vor zum Bau der Erde, ins Reich der ,,Mfitter". So gelangte GOETHE zur Geologie. Sie hat sein Streben nach Erkenntnis der letzten Dinge mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert erft~l]t und in seinen Dichtungen , vor allem im ,,Faust", stiirksten Widerhall gefunden.Bei Kennzeichnung der geologischen Studien GOETHEs mul3 festgehalten werden, dal] sich die Geologie als Wissenschaft damals erst in ihrem Anfangsstadium befand. Viele der zu GOETHES Zeiten als feststehende Tatsachen ge]tenden Grunds~tze mul]ten seither fallen. Die schrittweise Entwicklung der Kenntnisse hat auch a]le der Geologie verwandten Gebiete ungeahnt verschoben und erweitert. Mit Hilfe neuer, durch den ererbten Autoritiitsglauben unbeschwetter Erfahrungen und feinster Hilfsmittel sieht unser Weltbild heute freilich ganz anders aus als das GOETttES. So ge]ten auch hier des Famulus WAGNER Worte: ,,Es ist ein grog ErgStzen, sich in den Geist der Zeiten zu versetzen, zu schauen, wie vor uns ein weiser Mann gedaeht und wie wir's dann zuletzt so herrlieh welt gebracht." Nicht die Summe der heute noch gtiltigen Anschauungen in GOETHEs geologisehen Sehriften ergibt einen Magstab f~ir die Wertung seiner Geologische Rundschau. XXIII 1 L Aufsatze und Mitteilungen Studien, sondern die Erkenntnis seiner fiberaus scharfen Beobachachtungen und streng logischen Schltisse. In beiden Richtungen hat er manche Geologen seiner Zeit welt hinter sich gelassen. Aber GOETHE teiite mit ihnen die Irrtfimer wissenschaftlieher Voraussetzungen aus der ersten Jugendzeit der Geologie. Die zahlreichen geologischen Schriften und Notizen GOETHES .--fast 300 an der Zaht --gew~ihren klaren Einblick in sein wissenscha|'t~iches Vorgehen und ermSglichen das sonst so seltene" Bild, die Empf~ingnis, das Werden und Altern seiner geologisehen Ideen zu verfolgen. Wie der Tfirmer Lynkeus ,,Zum Sehen geboren, zum Sehauen bestellt", geht GOETHEs ,,gegenst~indliehes Denken" bei einem Problem von der Naturbeobachtung aus und gelangt durch Nachdenken zu einem Schlu~, der auf Grund neuer Naturbeoba...
