Plates I-IV, Figs. 1-3)Saprophytic and phagocytic isolates of Gyrodinium lebouriae Herdman were examined in the light and electron microscope. The longitudinal flagellum has short hairs (0-4-0-5 fim long). The transverse flagellum has an axoneme and a striated strand internally, and attached to the outside of this flagellum are long hairs (2-5-3 /«ni long), short hairs (0-5 lira, long) and curved spikes (0-25 /an long) in a single helical row. A column of cytoplasm, the peduncle, arises beneath the anterior end of the epicone and passes beneath the amphisema to the flagellar area where it emerges and continues outside the cell for 3-4 /tm. The peduncle contains microtubules and rod-shaped bodies. Vesicles containing crystalline rods are in the cytoplasm but plastids and pusules are absent. Endosymbiotic bacteria, with complete walls not contained in food vesicles, are common in the cytoplasm of the saprophytic isolates, but absent in the cytoplasm of the phagocytic isolates.
SYNOPSIS. Paraphysornonas vestita (Stokes), a colorless flagellate, has silicified external scales. In this study EDAX analysis of the scales confirmed earlier experimental evidence that silicon is the major component of the scales. The scales are formed in the endoplasmic reticulum of the cytoplasm and carried to the plasmalemma in vesicles. The flagellate is euryhaline growing in a range from 2.6x seawater to near distilled water. From the salinity data it appears that Paraphysornonar vestita is the same as Paraphysornonas imperforata Lucas. A GeOz concentration of 2.0 mg P (19.2 pM Ge) results in compIete inhibition of growth.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
