The addition of 0.2 mg epinephrine to the intrathecal combination of sufentanil and bupivacaine significantly prolonged labor analgesia without causing adverse effects to the mother or fetus. The intrathecal combination of sufentanil and bupivacaine, with or without epinephrine, provided rapid, profound labor analgesia and allowed most patients to ambulate.
Ten obstetric patients received 17-20 ml of autologous blood through an extradural catheter after inadvertent dural puncture. The time interval from dural puncture to prophylactic extradural blood patch ranged from 90 to 660 min. One of the 10 patients developed a mild occipital headache, which required no further intervention.
This study suggests that women and men who are referred to multidisciplinary pain treatment facilities do not differ significantly in terms of their pain-related experience. However, the aspects that differ may warrant further clinical attention when assessing and managing pain.
