Objective: to analyze the COVID-19 pandemic and what we have (re)learned from the world experience of adopting prevention measures recommended by the World Health Organization as well as the epidemiological overview in the world, in Latin America and in Brazil. Results: the World Health Organization has pointed out that the path to reduce the speed of circulation of the virus, control and decrease in the number of cases and deaths resulting from this pandemic can only be accomplished with mass adoption of fundamental measures that include hand hygiene, alcohol gel use, cough etiquette, cleaning surfaces, avoiding agglomerations and social distancing. The epidemiological curve of the disease clearly shows the devastating proportions in Italy, Spain and the United States, surpassing China in death records, due to the delay in adopting the aforementioned measures. In Brazil, the rapid progression in relation to the world and Latin America points to an important increase in the number of cases. Conclusion: this is possibly the most serious pandemic in recent human history, and its course can be influenced by the rigor in adopting individual and collective behavioral measures.
The aim of this study was to identify the variables that influence the firms inclusion in the BM&FBOVESPA Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI), and if such membership is correlated with the firm market value in the Brazilian market. We collected annual data of firms for the period 2006 to 2011. The methodology included the use of methods such as regression analysis type logit and panel data models. The results showed that companies that have joined the ISE have characteristics distinct from those who did not opt for membership. Firms with larger size, higher profitability and sectors considered high environmental impact are more likely to be classified in the ISE. When examined whether inclusion in the CSI has relation with the metric firm value, the results did not reject the hypothesis of positive relationship, even during the financial crisis of 2008, however, found evidence of a negative relationship in the post-crisis period.

Métodos: Tratou-se de uma coorte com seguimento de 2.137 pacientes (2005 -2008) Background and Objectives:Intensive care units are considered the main focus of bacterial resistance in hospital settings because they are the place where most multiresistant bacterial outbreaks take place. Monitoring the microbiological profile of organisms that cause infections is fundamental to support the rational use of antimicrobial agents and implement infection prevention and control measures. The objective of the present study was to assess the profile of sensitivity of microorganisms associated with colonization and infection to antimicrobial agents in an intensive care unit. Methods: The investigation was a cohort study with 2,137 patients admitted to a teaching Os dados foram coletados por vigilância ativa dos registros dos pacientes, diariamente na unidade.
This study aims to identify whether there is a relationship between dual class shares issuance, pyramidal ownership structure and firms’ financial performance in the Brazilian market. To this end, univariate tests and panel data analysis were applied in a sample for the 2000 to 2012 period. The results indicate that there is a significant and negative relationship between dual class shares issuance and firm’s financial performance, regardless of whether there is a pyramidal ownership structure in firm. In other hand, we find positive effects from pyramidal structure on the firm’s financial performance, conditioned that there is no dual class shares issuance, and also on the absence of an excessive number of levels until the ultimate controlling shareholder in the pyramidal structure. These evidences suggest that the voting power matters to improve firms’ financial performance; and that there are benefits and costs from pyramidal ownership structure in Brazilian firms.
The purpose of this paper was to analyze the relationships between the portfolio turnover and performance of equity investment funds in Brazil. There are few published studies on the subject, but the previously identified Brazilian studies that have examined making changes to portfolios have been limited to very restricted data samples and have only worked with an ordinary least squares (OLS) model without taking into account the indications of international studies and economic theory itself of the possible endogeneity of turnover, which would make OLS estimation inadequate. The expressive growth of the fund industry in the Brazilian market shows the relevance of the object of research. Two portfolio turnover metrics were analyzed: one based on changes in the monetary values of the assets and another based on changing the weights of the assets in the portfolio. The estimations were performed for fixed effects panel data and then for a two-stage least squares model, using instrumental variables. The funds that make up the sample are those classified as “free shares” in the period from January of 2012 to January of 2018. The results showed that there is a positive relationship between the portfolio turnover and performance of the equity investment funds, showing that managers have been able to take advantage of moments of mispricing in the market and that they carry out more trades in search of higher returns. This research extends the results in the literature as it shows that there is a positive relationship between the turnover and performance of equity investment funds that is independent of the way turnover or performance are measured, which has shown inconclusive results in previous studies. Furthermore, it presents evidence for a more representative and current sample in an emerging market.
