Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o impacto de sistemas de integração lavoura-pecuária sobre atributos físico-hídricos do solo e avaliar o potencial uso desses atributos como indicadores da qualidade física de um Latossolo. As amostras de solo foram coletadas nas camadas 0-5, 10-15, 20-25 e 40-45 cm. Todos os sistemas de uso e manejo do solo alteraram significativamente a densidade, umidade volumétrica, resistência à penetração, porosidade total, macroporosidade, microporosidade efetiva e água prontamente disponível do solo. Foram observados incrementos na resistência à penetração e na densidade do solo em todos os sistemas em comparação ao cerrado nativo. A compactação resultante do pisoteio animal durante quatro anos da fase pastagem, nos sistemas de integração lavoura-pecuária, não atingiu valores críticos, que pudessem limitar cultivos anuais subseqüentes. A porosidade total e a macroporosidade foram maiores no cerrado e nos sistemas em plantio direto em relação aos em preparo convencional. Soil physical quality under crop-livestock management systems in a Cerrado OxisolAbstract -The objective of this work was to analyze the effect of integrated crop-livestock systems on soil hydraulic properties, and test the potential use of these properties as physical quality indicators of a Cerrado Oxisol. The field study was conducted at Embrapa Cerrados, Planaltina, DF, Brazil, considering soil layers of: 0-5, 10-15, 20-25 and 40-45 cm. Crop-livestock systems caused significant changes in soil bulk density, volumetric soil-water content, soil penetration resistance, total porosity, macroporosity, effective microporosity, unsaturated pores and available water. An increase was observed in both soil resistance and bulk density for all systems in comparison to the cerrado. However, higher soil resistance did not appear as a limiting factor for annual crops growth in a rotation sequence. Total porosity and macroporosity were higher in the cerrado, and in the systems with no-tillage in relation to conventional tillage. Soil penetration resistance, macroporosity, bulk density and available soil-water properties are reliable indicators of the soil physical quality.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar os benefícios e as perspectivas potenciais de sistemas de integração lavoura-pecuária no processo de intensificação de uso das áreas em exploração com lavoura de grãos e pastagens no Cerrado, e apontar as principais lacunas de informação sobre o sistema. Os principais benefícios da integração lavoura-pecuária são: melhoria das propriedades químicas, físicas e biológicas do solo; redução da ocorrência de doenças, insetos-pragas e plantas daninhas; maior produtividade das plantas e dos animais; e redução de riscos pela diversificação de atividades. No entanto, a adoção do sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária ainda é pequena, provavelmente em virtude da maior complexidade desse sistema. Concentrar esforços nos fatores que limitam a adoção desse sistema no Cerrado parece ser um ponto estratégico para novos estudos. A busca por melhoria na qualidade de cobertura de solo para o sistema plantio direto, por meio de gramíneas forrageiras, pode auxiliar na adoção da integração lavoura-pecuária no Cerrado. The main benefits of crop-livestock integration are: improved chemical, physical and biological properties of the soil; reduction of diseases, pests and weed outbreaks occurrence; higher crop and animal productivity; and risk reduction due to diversification of activities. However, the adoption of the crop-livestock system is still low, probably due to the greater complexity of the system. Concentrating efforts on the factors that limit the system's adoption is strategic for new studies. The search for better soil cover for the no tillage system, through forage grasses, can boost the adoption of integrated crop-livestock in the Cerrado. RESUMOO uso racional do solo tem sido objeto de estudo e discussões em função da busca de alternativas tecnológicas que possibilitem o manejo correto do solo e, consequentemente, uma agricultura sustentável. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, levantar dados sobre a qualidade físico-hídrica e sua relação com os impactos gerados pelo manejo do solo por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica, contribuindo para melhor conhecimento das informações disponíveis na literatura. O uso de indicadores de qualidade física do solo permite designar práticas adequadas de manejo do solo. Uma análise crítica dos indicadores de qualidade física do solo revela que o índice proposto por Reynolds et al. (2002) possui limitações quanto ao uso, o intervalo hídrico ótimo apresenta bons resultados e o índice S necessita de mais trabalhos com o uso de h (tensão de água no solo) como variável independente. Assim, os indicadores de qualidade física do solo são úteis para avaliação do estado de conservação do solo possibilitando a gestão segura dos recursos naturais; todavia, os indicadores existentes apresentam, como inconvenientes, a elevada complexidade de execução e os custos de obtenção, o que configura oportunidade para o desenvolvimento de novos indicadores de qualidade física do solo.Palavras-chave: sistemas de manejo, compactação, estrutura do solo, indicadores de qualidade física Soil use and management and its impact on physical quality ABSTRACT The rational use of the soil has been the subject of study and discussion due to search for technological alternatives that allow the adequate management of the soil and consequently, a sustainable agriculture. The objective of this study was to collect data about the hydro-physical quality and its relation to the impacts caused by soil management through a literature review, contributing to better understanding of existing information in the literature. The use of indicators of physical quality of soil permit the designation of most appropriate soil management practices, especially those exposed to intensive agriculture. A critical analysis of indicators of soil quality show that the index proposed by Reynolds et al. (2002) has limitations about its use, the optimal hydric interval presents good results, and the S index needs more works with the use of h (soil-water suction) as the independent variable. Thus, the indicators of physical quality of soil are useful for evaluating the state of soil conservation, to making possible the secure management of natural resources, however, the existing indicators present very high complexity of the implementation and acquisition costs, which configures opportunity for the development of new indicators of physical quality of soil.

The Brazilian government aims at augmenting the area cropped under no-tillage (NT) from 32 to 40 million ha by 2020 as a means to mitigate CO 2 emissions. We estimated soil carbon (C) sequestration under continuous NT systems in two municipalities in the Goiás state that are representative of the Cerrado. A chronosequence of NT fields of different age since conversion from conventional tillage (CT) was sampled in 2003 and 2011. Soil C levels of native Cerrado and pasture were measured for comparison. After about 11 to 14 years, soil C stocks under NT were highest and at the levels of those under natural Cerrado. Average annual rates of soil C sequestration estimated using the chronosequence approach were respectively 1.61 and 1.48 Mg C ha −1 yr −1 for the 2003 and 2011 sampling, and were higher than those observed using repeated sampling after eight years. The diachronic sampling revealed that the younger NT fields tended to show higher increases in soil C stocks than the older fields. Converting an extra 8 million ha of cropland from CT to NT represents an estimated soil C storage of about 8 Tg C yr −1 during 10 to 15 years.At the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference of 2009 the Brazilian government committed to mitigation actions leading to projected reductions in its greenhouse gas emissions of 36 to 39% by 2020 1 . Brazil is one of the major greenhouse gas emitters in the world with historically more than half of its emissions originating from deforestation for agricultural land. From 2005 to 2010 reduced rates of deforestation resulted in circa 40% decrease in the total Brazilian emissions 2 . Today, emissions from agriculture, originating from cattle ranching and to a lesser extent from chemical fertilizer use, are at least equivalent to those from deforestation. Beside the continued efforts to control and reduce emissions from deforestation, one of the mitigation measures is the implementation of strategies that maintain and increase stocks of organic carbon (C) in agricultural soils. The adoption of no-tillage (NT) systems in croplands is considered as an effective way to achieve this. Within its ' Action Plan for Low Carbon Agriculture' launched in 2010, the Brazilian government aims at augmenting the area cropped under NT from 32 to 40 million ha by 2020 3 . Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a macrofauna edáfica e avaliar o efeito de plantas de cobertura em plantio direto, nos principais grupos da macrofauna do solo, em duas épocas de avaliação em um Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, com oito tratamentos (plantas de cobertura) e quatro repetições. As plantas de cobertura: Crotalaria juncea, guandu-anão (Cajanus cajan), Stylosanthes guianensis, Brachiaria brizantha, B. brizantha consorciada com milho (Zea mays), milheto (Pennisetum glaucum), mombaça (Panicum maximum) e Sorghum bicolor foram cultivadas de novembro a abril. Em setembro de cada ano, foi realizado o plantio de feijão, em cultivo irrigado por pivô central. A área útil em cada parcela foi de 60 m². Amostras de solo na forma de monólitos (25x25 cm) foram retiradas aleatoriamente em cada parcela, para contagem da macrofauna, às profundidades de 0-10 cm e 10-20 cm, em abril e em setembro de 2005. Os grupos taxonômicos, identificados em ordem decrescente de densidade relativa, são: Formicidae, Oligochaeta, Dermaptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Miriapoda, Isoptera, Araneae, Lepidoptera, Blattodea e larvas de Diptera. Crotalaria juncea apresentou maior densidade de macrofauna, seguida por B. Brizantha, B. Common bean was sown every September under centre pivot irrigation. The area of each plot was 60 m 2 . Soil monoliths (25x25 cm) were taken randomly from each plot, at 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm dephs, in April and September, 2005, and macrofauna was hand sorted. Identified groups in decreasing order of total density are: Formicidae, Oligochaeta, Dermaptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Miriapoda, Isoptera, Araneae, Lepidoptera, Blattodea and Diptera larvae. Crotalaria juncea showed the highest macrofauna density, followed by B. brizantha, B. brizantha/Zea mays association, Sorghum bicolor, Stylosanthes guianensis, Cajanus cajans, Pennisetum. glaucum, Panicum maximum. The use of cover species in no-tillage system, associated with irrigation, promotes soil colonization by macrofauna.

-The objective of this work was to assess the effects of integrated crop-livestock systems, associated with two tillage and two fertilization regimes, on the abundance and diversity of the soil macrofauna. Four different management systems were studied: continuous pasture (mixed grass); continuous crop; two croplivestock rotations (crop/pasture and pasture/crop); and native Cerrado as a control. Macrofauna was sampled using a modified Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility method, and all individuals were counted and identified at the morphospecies level for each plot. A total of 194 morphospecies were found, distributed among 30 groups, and the most representative in decreasing order of density were: Isoptera, Coleoptera larvae, Formicidae, Oligochaeta, Coleoptera adult, Diplopoda, Hemiptera, Diptera larvae, Arachnida, Chilopoda, Lepidoptera, Gasteropoda, Blattodea and Orthoptera. Soil management systems and tillage regimes affected the structure of soil macrofauna, and integrated crop-livestock systems, associated with no-tillage, especially with grass/legume species associations, had more favorable conditions for the development of "soil engineers" compared with continuous pasture or arable crops. Soil macrofauna density and diversity, assessed at morphospecies level, are effective data to measure the impact of land use in Cerrado soils.

In Brazil's central savanna region, government policy is to encourage the conversion of conventional plough tillage (PT) agriculture to no-till (NT) and raise the productivity of under-utilized pastures, including their conversion to integrated croplivestock (ICL) systems, with the objective of increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) at the expense of atmospheric carbon dioxide. An experiment was established in 1991 by liming and fertilizing at two levels an area of native vegetation (NV). The treatments, replicated in randomized plots, included pastures, continuous cropping and ICL systems under PT or NT. The aim of this study was to quantify the SOC accumulation to 100 cm depth under these treatments over time. The high C:N ratios suggested that there was a high proportion of charcoal present in the soil. Increasing fertilizer inputs had no overall significant effect on SOC stocks. Stocks of SOC changed little under pastures. Analyses of 13 C abundance showed that higher fertilizer inputs increased the decomposition rate of C derived from NV under pure grass pastures. Continuous cropping under NT preserved SOC and under PT there were significant losses. The highest SOC stocks were found under ILP treatments, but not all ILP treatments accumulated SOC even under NT. These results indicate that government initiatives to substitute PT with NT and to intensify beef cattle production will have only modest short-term gains in SOC accumulation.
