Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to assess different issues for promoting job satisfaction as well as improvement of work efficiency in the shrimp industry of Bangladesh.
Design/methodology/approach
The random sampling (RS) technique has been used for collecting data. A total of 132 data has been collected through a structured questionnaire from shrimp industry’s worker, working in different shrimp cultivating industry of three specific cultivating areas of the Southwestern part in Bangladesh such as Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat. The survey was conducted between June 2017 and July 2017.
Findings
This study shows that eight factors significantly influence job satisfaction among the shrimp workers in Bangladesh. Among these factors, four are relating to non-pecuniary issues such as workers’ appointment by appointment letter, job security, weekly holiday and safety of health and skin, and remaining four factors are relating to pecuniary issues such as legitimate payment for overtime, compensation, yearly increment and salary.
Originality/value
This study helps in assessing the opinion of the workers’ job satisfaction as well as policy planning for the development of the shrimp industry’s worker labour management.
The purpose of this study is to assess different factors under the Bangladesh labour legislation for promoting work-satisfaction of the global garment workers in Bangladesh. A convenient sampling technique was used for collecting 208 employee responses through a five-point Likert scale structured questionnaire. The respondents were garments-manufacturing industry workers working in three hot spots known as towns of Savar and Ashulia (Dhaka District) and Gazipur Sadar (Gazipur District). The survey was conducted between November and December, 2019. This research study finds that seven factors significantly influence work-satisfaction of garment workers in Bangladesh. Among these, four are related to the non-pecuniary factors: supervisory treatment of the workers, working environment, hygienic canteen facility, and medical facility. The three other factors, namely, the amount of salary, timely payment of salary and increment policy for the workers, play a significant part in workers’ satisfaction. This study helps in assessing the opinions of the workers about their work-satisfaction as well as policy planning for the development of the garments-manufacturing industry. Also, this study will add value to the setting of South Asian developing countries and industries because of the similar socio-economic environment to Bangladesh.
This article evaluates different factors under the Bangladesh Labor Act 2006 for promoting work satisfaction in the fish farming workers in Bangladesh. How far does this industry comply with standard labor laws adheres to international labor policy, and promotion of labor rights is another focus of this study. This study shows that yearly increment, overtime payment, weekly holiday, amount of compensation, appointment by appointment letter, and job security significantly influence the fish farming workers’ minds in Bangladesh. The Qualitative part of the study finds that the State must protect the workers’ rights by enacting a standard labor policy that adheres to international instruments, which it is unwilling to do so. This study helps in evaluating the opinion of the fishers’ work satisfaction as well as policy planning for the development of the fish farming industry. It will add value by creating awareness of labor rights in the Asian developing setting.
