VRML 2.0 offers a new medium for producing compelling interactive content. The best results, however, require extensive attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of the constraints of the delivery mechanism. Creation of a large-scale, consumer-grade hypermedia environment served as our motivation to discover what this new medium can really deliver. In this paper, we present the challenges and pitfalls faced, decisions made, special techniques used, and the lessons learned during a professional VRML production pipeline. Both world builders and tool makers can benefit tlom the technical and creative issues identified here. We cover the entire production process: storyboarding, scene composition, modeling, illumination, navigation issues, embedded user interface, and effective use of sound and animation. Our conclusions show that performance and interactivity must be the number one consideration throughout this proms.
