Background- Over the last few years, the prevalence of lung function abnormalities has led to several mass testing programs across the world. PFT induction jacket has been invented as a small step towards making the process of performing FVC maneuver effortless and productive for both the patients and the medical practitioner. Method- The jacket is made up of a three-layered PVC sheet sealed together to form a single jacket with two chambers. The inner chamber is formed between an inner layer and middle layer, in which, when triggered cold water of 10 degree is circulated using connected water unit. Like ways, an outer chamber where air is pressurised using connected air unit is formed between middle layer and outer layer. Thirty volunteers performed FVC maneuver with and without wearing jacket. Results- There was no difference between the results in spirometry parameters ‘without jacket’ and ‘with jacket’. However, Median ± IQR (Q3-Q1) for the number of trials, which a participant had to undergo to perform spirometry was 3 ± 2 (4 − 2) (without jacket) and 1 ± 1 (2 − 1) (with jacket) and this difference was statistically significant (Wilcoxon signed rank test z = 4.129, p < 0.0001), which shows the jacket’s usefulness in performing FVC maneuver. Conclusion- PFT induction jacket has automated the FVC maneuver of computerized Spirometer by triggering physiological inspiratory gasp using cold water and circumscribing pressurised air for expiration. Induction jacket makes the maneuver easy to perform, time efficient and effortless for the patient.
