Introdução: A Organização Mundial de Saúde considera as infeções associadas aos cuidados de saúde um verdadeiro problema de saúde pública, com impacto crescente à escala mundial. As Precauções Dependentes das Vias de Transmissão são reconhecidas como uma medida de excelência, constituindo-se os serviços de urgência locais fulcrais para a sua implementação, com vista à promoção da segurança do doente. Objetivo: Pretendeu-se incrementar o seu cumprimento, junto dos enfermeiros de um serviço de urgência, com recurso a estratégias formativas. Métodos: Desenvolvemos um estudo exploratório-descritivo durante 9 semanas, nas quais foram realizadas 2 sessões formativas, envolvendo um total de 30 enfermeiros. Resultados: Numa primeira observação (pré-formação), a avaliação média foi de 32%, tendo posteriormente subido para os 75%, com todos os enfermeiros a melhorar o seu desempenho. Globalmente verificámos uma melhoria de 43% no cumprimento das medidas referentes a cada via de transmissão. Discussão: Os resultados obtidos revelam que os enfermeiros demonstram inconformidades na implementação das precauções baseadas na transmissão, durante a prestação de cuidados. As estratégias de cariz formativo, adaptadas às necessidades reais de cada contexto, conduzem ao desenvolvimento de boas práticas. Conclusão: As medidas preventivas de controlo de infeção devem ser cumpridas em todos os contextos do sistema de saúde, incluindo o serviço de urgência, com incremento da segurança do paciente. Os enfermeiros são elementos cruciais na liderança de projetos de melhoria contínua da qualidade.
