Indian economy comprises of two sectors rural and urban. In economic transformation from agriculture to an industrial society handloom industry plays an important role in generating local employment as it is scattered in the rural and urban areas. It works as a vehicle for poverty alleviation, rural income generation and regional economic development. Various governmental policies and institutional framework can play a very important role in the field of development. In spite of these, it has been observed that a number of handloom weaving units are continued to be in the grip of problems. The problems range from limited products range to absence of market value chain along with poor front end marketing. Therefore the purpose of this research is to familiarize with the current status of handloom and handloom Industry of Assam.
The union fabrics were made from eri with cotton and eri with polyester. The 2/60s eri silk yarn was used as warp and 2/40s cotton and polyester yarns were used as weft to construct the eri union fabrics using three different weaves namely plain, twill and satin. The prepared eri x cotton and eri x polyester union fabrics and also the pure eri x eri fabrics were tested for different physical properties. Properties of union fabric developed in a traditional handloom using 60s reed count. The quality parameters, viz., fabric tensile strength and elongation, crease recovery, drapability, thickness, abrasion, stiffness of the developed fabric, met essential apparel requirements. A comparative subjective evaluation of the fabric quality, viz., aesthetic appearance, luster, texture, was made with the help of a group of people from different age, educational and occupational background to examine the tactile properties as well as suitability of the fabric for the prepared products, all the respondents felt that eri x cotton twill, eri x polyester twill and eri x polyester satin were good in appearance. Texture and luster were found to be medium to high. About a very few respondents felt that fabrics were crispy.
Assam has a glorious cultural tradition in textiles and handloom weaving. The traditional handloom fabrics of Assam unfold the creative genius of the local weavers. The colours, patterns and designs signify artistic property and social significance. It has been observed that traditional costumes are often decorated with motifs depicting various kinds of plants and animals or their parts, inanimate objects and in some cases abstract art. However, this items are generally found limited to the traditional items. This study was an attempt to popularize the Assamese woven motifs used by the weavers in their textile craft to create Center panel designs for Kurti.
Handloom industry in India is an ancient cottage industry with a decentralized set up. Handloom sector plays a very important role in the country’s economy. Assam is a state situated in the northeast of India and is located just below the eastern Himalayan foothills. Handloom industry is the most important industry in Assam having a glorious past. It is closely associated with art and culture of the society. It is the largest cottage industry next to agriculture and plays a key role in the socio- economic life of the people. Inspite of considerable efforts made to rehabilitate it; handloom weaving units continue to be in the grip of problems. Therefore the purpose of this study is to familiarize with the strength, weakness, opportunities and threat of Handloom weaving units of Assam.
