An approach to assertive training and assertive behavior development employed successfully with rehabilitation personnel is presented and discussed. The training program is a marathon (one-day) format which effectively combines systematic training in assertive behavior with a Rational Emotive Training encounter experience. A brief review of assertive training is included as well as a description of a typical training schedule. The approach to training is then discussed in detail along with several concerns of the authors that have arisen in the course of this training.
The authors describe a Systematic Human Relations Training program, based on the Carkhuff model of the Art of Helping, which was conducted for a heterogeneous group of rehabilitation professionals and clerical staff. Pre and post measures of discrimination and communication of helping responses were taken and analyzed. The results of the study indicate that this type of training was effective in raising the discrimination and communication skill levels of this heterogeneous group. Trainee satisfaction with training was evaluated as high and several trainee reactions are reported. The authors conclude with a discussion of several implications of their type of training especially as it may apply to group supervision and team approach to rehabilitation.
