Asian Americans have been touted as the "model minority" since the 1960s. The authors examine the prevalence, accuracy, and implications of this label, and, based on a review of the literature, discuss problems associated with this characterization. The authors point out ways in which such labeling impedes rather than facilitates access to various opportunities and also results in discrimination and societal indifference regarding the needs of Asian Americans.Los Americanos Asiáticos han sido recomendados como el "modelo de la minoria" desde la década de los 60. We investigated the relation of help-seeking history, sex, and depression to college students' attitudes, beliefs, and intentions about obtaining professional psychological help. College students completed questionnaires that included the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh, 1961), an inquiry about help-seeking history, and an attitude scale constructed according to the method posited in the theory of reasoned action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980). Of these 429, 126 who represented extremes of the depression continuum were selected as subjects for data analyses. Though sex differences were not found, results indicated that the experience of having sought help is positively related to how one feels about seeking help and that the experience of depression, regardless of help-seeking history, is also related to more positive attitudes, beliefs, and intentions. Implications for educative interventions are considered.Research in counseling psychology is replete with efforts to better understand and describe potential clients of counseling services. Motivations and experiences relevant to the career choices of 56 clinical psychologists practicing psychotherapy were assessed and compared with those from a sample of 53 social psychologists. Clinical psychologists were more likely than social psychologists to have been influenced in their career selections by (a) experiences of psychological distress in themselves and in their families of origin, (b) desires to resolve personal problems, and (c) a wish to pursue opportunities for vocational achievement and professional advancement. However, most respondents did not view problematic histories as central to their choice of career, and the magnitude of difference between the two groups of professionals was small. Results illuminate reasons why individuals choose careers as psychotherapists. Implications for the training of therapists are also discussed.

In the first part of this article we present several perspectives on maladaptive perfectionism and discuss the origins and characteristics of this cognitive-behavioral pattern. Chapter 21 introduces an ideal training model for psychotherapy integration. It then considers training in light of the four principal routes of integration - technical eclecticism, theoretical integration, common factors, and assimilative integration - as the training objectives and sequence will differ somewhat among them. Next, it addresses questions regarding the centrality of personal therapy and the necessity of research training in the preparation of integrative therapists. It reviews integrative supervision, specifically problems in the acquisition of integrative competence and an improved system. It concludes with a discussion of organizational strategies for introducing changes, particularly those promoting psychotherapy integration, into training institutions.

The present study used Consensual Qualitative Research methodology to explore how experienced therapists understand and learn from impactful cases of premature termination. Eleven board certified psychologists were interviewed regarding a former client who left treatment prematurely. Participants were asked to reflect on client and therapist factors that may have contributed to premature termination, and on how the termination affected their work and professional development. Results indicated that therapist reactions and mistakes may contribute to the risk of premature termination, and that therapists may experience complex and lasting personal reactions to such outcomes. While they may face considerable uncertainty, therapists can learn valuable lessons by reflecting on departed clients. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Our purpose was to examine the effects of cognitive group therapy, aerobic exercise, or their combination on anxiety reduction. Seventy participants were divided into four groups: cognitive group therapy, aerobic exercise, both treatments, or control. Participants were administered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) before and after the study, and at a two-month follow-up. Results indicate that all interventions were equally effective in reducing anxiety as compared to no intervention. The combination of cognitive group therapy and exercise was not significantly more effective than either cognitive group therapy or aerobic exercise alone. Although effects were not maintained after two months, it is unclear whether this is attributable to the limitations of such interventions in changing more enduring traits.
