Th e overa ll obj ec ti ve of th e proj ec t was to st ud y th e st ruc tural and stratigraphi c hi story o f the shelf and its re latio nshi p to the e nvironm ent throug h labo ra tory a na lysis of t h e cores, using stratig ra phi c, petrologic, c h em ica l, and p hysica l me thods.Th e four co res nbtain ed were logged , packed, a nd shipped to Dartmouth Co ll ege for d c tailed st ud y. The res ults of th is initi a l wo rk showed that the cores were co mposed o f fo ur ice types : g lacier ice, lak e ice, ·sea ice, and transition ice. Chlorinity, su lfate, a nd density p ro fil es complemented m egasco pi c studi es a nd were most useful crite ria fo r pl otting stra ti g raphi c cha nges in ice type.R es u lts of th e in vestigations thus fa r h ave yield ed new info rm a ti o n a bout the g ross structure and stratigrap h y o f the ice sh e lf an d re-cntra nt. Analysis of glaciologial data indicates that grounding of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf and its conversion into an ice rise was primarily the result of local thickening of a floating ice shelf and the availability of a very gently sloping sea floor on which the ice shelf came to rest. Application of heat conduction theory to a series of thermal profiles through the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, and the Ward Hunt, Camp Creek and Cape Discovery ice rises shows that present heat flow in this area of northern Ellesmere Island is more than twice normal, and that the outer and intermediate parts of the Ward Hunt ice rise grounded 250–350 years ago, during a cycle of climatic deterioration. Development and localization of ice rises along northern Ellesmere Island are strongly influenced by topography, and all ice rises we have studied seem to have formed within the past 1 600 years, possibly with major growth in the interval from 1 000 to 150 years ago.

Describes an aerial photographic reconnaissance in Apr and Sept 1964 of the approx 30,000 sq mi area most seriously affected by the Mar 27 earthquake to assess the extent to which glacial features had been modified. Little change was apparent in glacial basins, lakes or tidewater calving, much less than after the 1899 and 1958 earthquakes of comparable violence. Some rock slides on to glaciers were impressive. The effects are related to the Tarr and Martin (No 17449) theory of earthquake avalanche supply, but it may be several years before evidence to test the applicability of the theory to the 1964 earthquake is apparent. 25 air photos with detailed descriptive notes illus the features described.
