Light scattering and transmission of Gaussian (G) and Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) vortex beams with different orbital angular momentum (L) in various turbid media were investigated. Transmittance was measured with varied ratios of sample thickness (z) to scattering mean free path (ls) of turbid media, z/ls. In the ballistic region, the LG and G beams were found to have no significant difference on transmittance, while in the diffusive region, the LG beams showed a higher received signal than the G beams, and the LG beams with higher L values showed a higher received signal than those with lower L values. The transition points from ballistic to diffusive regions for different scattering media were determined. This newly observed transmittance difference of LG and G beams may be used for deep target detection in turbid media through LG beam imaging.
The production of orbital angular momentum (OAM) by using a q-plate, which functions as an electrically tunable spatial frequency filter, provides a simple and efficient method of edge contrast in biological and medical sample imaging for histological evaluation of tissue, smears, and PAP smears. An instrument producing OAM, such as a q-plate, situated at the Fourier plane of a 4f lens system, similar to the use of a high-pass spatial filter, allows the passage of high spatial frequencies and enables the production of an image with highly illuminated edges contrasted against a dark background for both opaque and transparent objects. Compared with ordinary spiral phase plates and spatial light modulators, the q-plate has the added advantage of electric control and tunability.
Light scattering and transmission of optical Laguerre Gaussian (LG) vortex beams with different orbital angular momentum (OAM) states in turbid scattering media were investigated in comparison with Gaussian (G) beam. The scattering media used in the experiments consist of various sizes and concentrations of latex beads in water solutions. The LG beams were generated using a spatial light modulator in reflection mode. The ballistic transmissions of LG and G beams were measured with different ratios of thickness of samples (z) to scattering mean free path (l s ) of the turbid media, z/l s . The results show that in the ballistic region where z/l s is small, the LG and G beams show no significant difference, while in the diffusive region where z/ls is large, LG beams show higher transmission than Gaussian beam. In the diffusive region, the LG beams with higher orbital angular momentum L values show higher transmission than the beams with lower L values. The transition points from ballistic to diffusive regions for different scattering media were studied and determined.
