Environmental phenomena such as strong winds, high waves, restrictions to visibility and thunderstorms can be hazardous to US Navy fleet operations. The Mediterranean region is an area where the complicated topography significantly influences these kind of environmental phenomena, particularly in the coastal regions. Because the US Navy recognised this as a concern to many ship captains, the Marine Meteorology Division of the Naval Research Laboratory, Monterey, California was asked to evaluate the severe weather suitability of 55 Mediterranean ports and document the results. The resulting analyses provide decision‐making guidance for ship captains as well as environmental information for operational forecasters. These port evaluations have been disseminated in hard copy form as individual port studies as well as in a compilation of all port studies in CD‐ROM format.
