This article assesses 101 randomly selected companies for their biodiversity-related reporting of environmental performance indicators to meet the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3.1 guideline requirement. To evaluate the reporting of environment performance indicators related to biodiversity, a 1-5 rating scale was developed where 5 ranked the highest. The maximum rating of 5 was obtained by 13% of the reporting companies. According to the GRI G3.1 guideline, environmental performance indicator number 12 (EN12) requests the companies to describe the 'significant impacts of their activities, products, and services on biodiversity in protected areas and areas of high biodiversity value outside protected areas'. Most of the sampled companies (82%) reported this indicator. Environmental performance indicator number 15 (EN15) requests the companies to disclose the 'number of IUCN Red List species and national conservation list species with habitats in areas affected by operations, by level of extinction risk'. This was the least-reported indicator by the surveyed companies (25%). Reporting of environmental performance indicators related to biodiversity, and initiatives based on GRI guidelines have been adopted with varying degrees of success by business organizations, but efforts are still required to understand the returns from the initiatives undertaken and reporting the returns earned. ARTICLE HISTORY
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a desirable approach considering it reduces risks, increases brand value, improves transparency, and has a possible impact on the financial health of the business. Initiated as an act of philanthropy, it has recently become mandatory as a part of the Companies Act, 2013 in India which mandates CSR spending. The study had an objective to validate that CSR disclosures lead to better financial performance of a company and vice-versa. The study analyzed the relationship between CSR disclosure and financial performance and vice versa using various approaches viz., exploratory to understand the trends and practices and statistical by adopting multiple regression modelling techniques. The results of the study reveal that the company's financial performance (profitability) has a cause and effect relationship with the CSR disclosure and vice versa, which substantiated the theories predicting that CSR can affect the financial performance of the company.
Ecological problems rooted due to organizational activities have increased significantly, yet the role businesses play in achieving ecological sustainability has not gained much attention. Businesses are not only dependent on biodiversity and its services but have serious impact on ecosystems directly or indirectly. Greater pressure on biodiversity due to business impact will have a rebounding effect which poses risk to business and society at large. The present study explores the possible determinants affecting the adoption of biodiversity conservation strategies by Indian businesses thus identifying the Biodiversity Capability model for Indian businesses. The study has used exploratory approach to understand the trends, practices, and the plethora of biodiversity conservation strategies adopted by companies. The results suggest that biodiversity conservation strategies undertaken by companies were influenced by whether or not the managers of these companies interpreted biodiversity conservation as an opportunity or threat and the propensity of the managers to undertake risk on behalf of their companies.
