Hoy en día, la docencia a nivel superior encara procesos de transformación profunda, en gran medida derivados de las condiciones forzadas por la pandemia de COVID-19, pero que ya se venían observando desde tiempos anteriores. A las y los docentes de nivel superior se les exige actualmente poseer un gran cúmulo de conocimientos y habilidades enfocados en la práctica de enseñanza, y no solo en sus áreas de especialidad. La actualización es primordial para el desempeño profesional de la docencia, pero es insuficiente. El objetivo de este artículo es discutir la relación entre los conceptos de vocación y formación docente con base en entrevistas realizadas a docentes de nivel superior del área de la salud. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa basada en 18 relatos de vida de docentes de diversas carreras y múltiples situaciones contractuales, adscritos a la Facultad de Estudios Superiores Iztacala de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México; el análisis se realizó mediante estrategias de codificación. Los resultados se presentan en 8 categorías analíticas que, considerando las condiciones particulares de la labor docente en el nivel superior en el área de la salud, permiten vislumbrar dimensiones constitutivas de la vocación docente. Se concluye que la vocación puede ser innata, descubierta o desarrollada, en función de los procesos de formación docente, que se distinguen de los procesos de profesionalización. Se destaca que la vocación y la formación son auténticos impulsos para la transformación, algo deseable en el contexto mundial contemporáneo.
