In this article, we argue that emotion regulation is an essential (and traditionally underemphasized) feature of mental health. To develop this idea, we first define the terms emotion, emotion ngulation, and mental health. We then chart the development of emotion regulation and describe its role in various facets of normal functioning. Next, we consider what happens when emotion becomes dysregulated in a major depressive episode. We suggest that an emotion regulat o y perspective integrates diverse theoretical views of depression and has implications for the assessment, treatment, and prevention of depression. We conclude by speculating about the role of emotion regulation in the broader context of public mental health.

The past decade has witnessed a resurgence of interest in behavioral interventions for depression. This contemporary work is grounded in the work of Lewinsohn and colleagues, which laid a foundation for future clinical practice and science. This review thus summarizes the origins of a behavioral model of depression and the behavioral activation (BA) approach to the treatment and prevention of depression. We highlight the formative initial work by Lewinsohn and colleagues, the evolution of this work, and related contemporary research initiatives, such as that led by Jacobson and colleagues. We examine the diverse ways in which BA has been investigated over time and its emerging application to a broad range of populations and problems. We close with reflections on important directions for future inquiry.

Nortriptyline is a promising adjunct for smoking cessation. Smokers with a history of depression are aided by more intensive psychosocial treatments. Mood and diagnosis interact to predict relapse. Increases in negative affect after quitting smoking are attenuated by nortriptyline.

This article describes the test of the hypothesis that a cognitive-behavioral mood management intervention would be effective for smokers with a history of major depressive disorder (MDD). The method was randomized trial; the assessments occurred at Weeks 0, 8, 12, 26, and 52. Ss were 149 smokers; 31% had a history of MDD. All received 2 mg of nicotine gum. Mood management was provided in 10 group sessions over 8 weeks. Standard treatment was provided in 5 group sessions over 8 weeks. Outcome was continuous abstinence. History-positive Ss were more likely to be abstinent when treated with mood management. Treatment condition differences were not significant for history-negative Ss. For history-positive Ss, less anger at baseline predicted abstinence. For history-negative Ss, more years smoked and higher baseline carbon monoxide (CO) predicted abstinence. Cognitive-behavioral therapy did not affect mood after quitting. Abstinence predictors differed as a function of baseline diagnosis.

Before the 1980s, no randomized controlled trials had been carried out to test whether major depressive episodes could be prevented. In the past 30 years, several trials have reported success in reducing the incidence (the number of new cases) of major depressive episodes. These studies suggest that major depression can be prevented. Given the large burden of disease caused by major depression, it is time for substantial systematic efforts to replicate these studies, carry out multisite trials, and widely disseminate prevention interventions found to be effective. The present review examines the conceptual and practical differences between treatment and prevention trials and the importance of identifying groups at high short-term risk for major depressive episodes to make prevention trials feasible. We also list the randomized controlled prevention trials that have been carried out to date and discuss the need for prevention interventions that go beyond the limits of traditional face-to-face interventions.

The overall 12-month 7-day abstinence rates were 20.2% for Spanish speakers and 21.0% for English speakers when those with missing data were assumed to be smoking. Discussion:Internet smoking cessation interventions with such abstinence rates provided globally in additional languages could contribute substantially to tobacco control efforts. IntroductionThere are 1.1 billion smokers worldwide ( World Bank, 1999 ), and there were 5.4 million tobacco attributable deaths in 2005 ( Mathers & Loncar, 2006 ). International approaches to smoking cessation are needed to help those with less access to traditional smoking cessation methods. The Internet provides one means of providing such interventions. Traditional smoking cessation methods, such as nicotine replacement therapy or smoking cessation groups, yield abstinence rates in the range of 14% -27% at 6 months ( Fiore, Smith, Jorenby, & Baker, 1994 ;Lando, McGovern, Barrios, & Etringer, 1990 ;Schroeder, 2005 ). Newer medications, such as varenicline ( Gonzales et al., 2006 ) and long-term combination approaches ( Hall, Humfl eet, Reus, Muñoz, & Cullen, 2004 ), can increase and maintain abstinence rates to 30% or higher levels. Methods:We report a randomized control trial in which 500 Spanish-speaking and 500 English-speaking adult Internet users, smoking at least 5 cigarettes/day and intending to quit in the next month, were recruited online from 68 countries. Consenting participants who completed baseline measures, logged cigarettes smoked on 3 days within a week, and set a quit date were randomized to four conditions. Each condition added new elements: Condition 1 was the " Guía Para Dejar de Fumar, " a static National Cancer Institute evidence-based stop smoking guide; Condition 2 consisted of Condition 1 plus E-mail reminders to return to the site; Condition 3 consisted of Condition 2 plus mood management lessons; and Condition 4 consisted of Condition 3 plus a " virtual group " (an asynchronous bulletin board). Main outcome measures were 7-day point prevalence abstinence at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after initial quit date.
