Abstract. Using the variance in meteor radar winds as a measure of gravity wave activity, we investigate the temporal variations in gravity waves at three locations in Brazil: São João do Cariri (2005) which makes it possible to separate the zonal and meridional components of the fluctuating wind velocity. We find that the seasonal variation of the fluctuating wind is similar to that of the amplitude of the diurnal tide, showing a predominantly semi-annual variation, stronger at Cachoeira Paulista and Santa Maria than at the quasi-equatorial station, Cariri. Both with respect to the seasonal trend and shorter term variations, strong coupling between gravity wave activity and tides is indicated by a remarkably close correlation between the fluctuating velocity and the vertical shear in the tidal winds. It is not clear as to whether this is caused by gravity wave forcing of the tides or whether it results from in situ generation of gravity waves by tidal wind shear.
In this work the characteristics of the gravity waves vertical propagation in the altitude interval between 80 and 100 km has been investigated. For this purpose, we have used the nightglow imager recorded by an all-sky CCD camera and meteor wind measurements obtained over São João do Cariri (7.4• S, 36.5• W), Brazil. The data were simultaneously obtained during the time interval from 2004/August to 2006/July. During this time were obtained 214 nights of observations, in which were detected 1036 gravity waves events. In order to investigate the gravity wave vertical propagation conditions, the method proposed by Isler et al. [1] was used and the results showed that all three types of propagation conditions (vertical, evanescent and duct) are in accordance with studies already reported.
The study of atmospheric tides between 80 and 110 km altitude, mesosphere region of high and low termosfera (MLT), is of great scientific importance, therefore, allows us to know the climatology of the atmosphere through fluctuations, such as: waves of gravity, planetary waves and waves of tides. This study aims to investigate the behavior of atmospheric tides daytime, semidiurna and terdiurna in the equatorial region based on data from wind meteoric obtained in São João do Cariri-PB. The period of study was between August 2004 and August 2006 where observed data from winds were compared with the HWM93 and CIRA models, while the amplitudes and phases of tides were compared with the GSWM00 model.
