ABSTRACT. Seasonality of insects in the semi-arid Caatinga of northeastern Brazil. Insects are essential to tropical ecosystems functioning. In semi-arid regions, the increase in abundance and/or activity (e.g. reproduction and foraging behavior) of insects is usually associated with climatic variables. The present study investigates which climatic variables are best predictors of insect abundance in an area of Caatinga in northeastern Brazil. Individuals were sampled for 24 months using Malaise and pitfall traps, and beating trays. A total of 58925 individuals belonging to 20 insect orders were collected. The most abundant orders were Hymenoptera, Diptera, Collembola and Coleoptera. Most orders studied showed a clear maximum abundance in the rainy season. Rainfall and humidity were the best predictors of insect abundance in the Caatinga. However, no climatic variable could explain Psocoptera and Blattodea variance in abundance/activity. Our results suggest that climatic changes associated with rainfall patterns in the Caatinga may affect ecosystem processes and services that depend direct or indirectly on insect abundance/activity. KEYWORDS. Abundance; climatic variables; insect availability; Neotropical region.
Palavras-chave: Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea, Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae, Parque Nacional do Jaú Dynastinae Beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae) of Parque Nacional do Jaú, state of Amazonas, Brazil.ABSTRACT -Dynastinae beetles were collected at the Parque Nacional do Jaú, state of Amazonas between July/1993 to June/1996, during new moon and last quarter in five different places near the lowlands of the Jau river. A mixed 250 W mercury vapor lamp plus two daily periods of 12 consecutive hours. 34 species of 14 genera were identified being the species of the tribe Cyclocephalini the more represented (19 species), followed by Oryctini (6 spp.), Phileurini (4 spp.), Pentodontini (3 spp.) and Dynastini with 2 species.
Wealth of Families and Alimentary Habits in Beetles Captured in the Farm of EMPARN- Jiqui, Parnamirim/RN Abstract. The Beetles can be found in different terrestrial and aquatic habitats and feed of a large variety of vegetal and animal substances deriving from the environment. Searching to understand this high diversity and its alimentary habits they had been categorized in five trophic groups: carnivorous, detritivorous, herbivorous, fungivorous and algivorous. Aiming to recognize these groups, identify families and its alimentary habits in adult beetles, collects were done at the EMPARN – Jiqui farm, a experimental farm placed near the city of Natal, the principal city at Rio Grande do Norte State. Four areas were studied: an Atlantic forest fragment, a precocious dwarf cashew, a green dwarf coconut palm and a giant hybrid coconut palm. During 26 consecutive weeks between January to July 2005, malaise traps were used on each area collecting 1544 beetles of 30 families distributed like this: in forest fragment were captured 692 beetles of 28 families; giant hybrid coconut palm 533 beetles of 20 families; precocious dwarf cashew 184 beetles of 15 families and green-dwarf-coconut-palm where were collected 135 specimens of 18 families. The trophic groups classification shows that herbivorous had 14 families; carnivorous, 9 families; detritivorous 5 families and fungivorous had only 4 families. The five most numerous families were herbivorous representing 64% of all the Coleoptera and in the forest fragment we had the higher number of herbivorous families of all experiment. Then, this fragment has demonstrated to have a big insect diversity being a small support and spread area even so surrounded by monocultivations and the city.
The family Myrmecolacidae (Strepsiptera) exhibit the unusual phenomenon of sexually dimorphic host relationships known as heterotrophic heteronomy, whereby males parasitize ants and females parasitize grasshoppers, crickets and mantids. It has therefore been impossible phenotypically to match male Myrmecolacidae to their conspecific females: the male and female of only one species have so far been unequivocally matched, and this was by molecular characterization. Here we report another match of a male and its conspecific female: by comparison of the CO1 and 18S genes of male Myrmecolax incautus Oliveira and Kogan, which parasitizes a ponerine ant from French Guyana, and a female strepsipteran, which parasitizes a mantid from Brazil. The male M. incautus is redescribed, and the first descriptions of the neotenic female, the male cephalotheca and the first instar larva are given. We also report for the first time dimorphic hosts of the male and the female M. incautus, and describe for the first time, the behaviour of stylopized ants.Correspondence: J. Kathirithamby,
