Keywords: Helicenes / Heck reaction / Palladium / Photocyclisation / Synthetic methods 2-Bromo[5]helicene derivatives and substituted [7]helicenes have been prepared through a synthetic sequence relying on Heck-type and photocyclodehydrogenation reactions. This procedure provides a new, versatile and efficient approach to helicene derivatives.

3,14-Dihydroxy[6]helicene 4 was prepared, in a good yield, through a ''4 þ 1'' approach involving the MizorokieHeck coupling reaction followed by oxidative photodehydrocylisation. Resolution of this racemic helicenediol was performed by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase, providing both enantiomers (À)-and (þ)-4 with high optical purity. The absolute configurations of (À)-and (þ)-4 were assigned as M and P, respectively, by means of circular dichroism spectroscopy. To cite this article: F. Aloui et al., C. R. Chimie 12 (2009).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
