Messages on sunscreen use have penetrated the population well, but lower use among the unemployed suggests cost as an issue. Lack of sun avoidance in young people, especially men, poses a risk for further skin cancer increases. Low levels of reported skin self-examination in older people, men and those with lower educational attainment identify areas for further action.
Summary* A medical audit was carried out on 10831 patients, presenting to an Eye Casualty Department in one year. 57% were treated for refractive errors, 7.7% for ocular foreign bodies and 6.5% for conjunctivitis. One fifth of ocular foreign bodies were caused by grinding accidents. Defects in such a medical audit, arising from errors of input and from choice of diagnostic criteria, are discussed.
