INVOLUNTARY MUSICAL IMAGERY (INMI) DESCRIBESthe everyday phenomenon of having a tune stuck in the head. Research has established the ubiquity of this form of spontaneous cognition but the predictive role of individual differences is still debated. This study examines the impact of everyday musical behaviors and subclinical obsessive compulsive attributes on INMI experiences. In total 1,536 participants completed three online questionnaires; a novel inventory of musical behavior and INMI, and a standardized obsessive compulsion (OC) inventory. Exploratory factor analysis (N ¼ 512) and structural equation modelling (N ¼ 1,024) were applied. Everyday singing and music listening positively predict length and frequency of reported INMI episodes, respectively. No relationships were found with musical training. High OC was positively related to INMI frequency and disturbance, but only indirectly to INMI episode length and unpleasantness. The identified contributory factors of INMI experiences are discussed in the context of musical memory and spontaneous mental activity.
There is growing awareness across the neuroscience community that the replicability of findings about the relationship between brain activity and cognitive phenomena can be improved by conducting studies with high statistical power that adhere to welldefined and standardised analysis pipelines. Inspired by recent efforts from the psychological sciences, and with the desire to examine some of the foundational findings using electroencephalography (EEG), we have launched #EEGManyLabs, a large-scale international collaborative replication effort. Since its discovery in the early 20th century, EEG has had a profound influence on our understanding of human cognition, but there is limited evidence on the replicability of some of the most highly cited discoveries. After a systematic search and selection process, we have identified 27 of the most influential and continually cited studies in the field. We plan to directly test the replicability of key findings from 20 of these studies in teams of at least three independent laboratories. The design and protocol of each replication effort will be submitted as a Registered Report and peer-reviewed prior to data collection.Prediction markets, open to all EEG researchers, will be used as a forecasting tool to examine which findings the community expects to replicate. This project will update our confidence in some of the most influential EEG findings and generate a large open access database that can be used to inform future research practices. Finally, through this international effort, we hope to create a cultural shift towards inclusive, highpowered multi-laboratory collaborations.
The direct transnasal transsphenoidal approach to the pituitary fossa has been used in our unit since 1987. We describe the procedure and report its use in 48 patients with pituitary lesions. Successful access to the pituitary fossa was made in 46 out of 50 operations (92%). In two cases, repeat transnasal exploration was successfully performed for recurrent tumour 3 and 5 years following an initial trans-nasal exploration. This approach is straightforward, quick and does not require dissection of nasal mucosa or removal of septal cartilage. There was a 5.8% rate of major post-operative complications, and this compares favourably with other routes of access to the pituitary fossa. No long-term nasal, septal or dental complications have occurred, such as may happen with the other routes to the sphenoid sinus and pituitary fossa.
Likelihood thought–action fusion (TAF-L) refers to a cognitive bias in which individuals believe that the mere thought of a negative event increases its likelihood of occurring in reality. TAF-L is most commonly associated with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) but is also present in depression, generalized anxiety disorder and psychosis. We induced TAF-L in individuals with high (High-OC, N = 23) and low (Low-OC, N = 24) levels of OC traits, and used low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) to localise the accompanying electrical brain activity patterns. The results showed greater TAF-L in the High-OC than in the Low-OC group (p < .005), which was accompanied by significantly greater upper beta frequency (19–30 Hz) activity in the precuneus (p < .05). Further, the precuneus activity was positively correlated with self-reported magnitude of TAF-L (p < .01), suggesting a specific role of this region in this cognitive bias. Results are discussed with reference to self-referential processing and the default-mode network.
We have reviewed 22 flexor tendon repairs in zone 1 undertaken in Hobart, Tasmania, during the period 1986 to 1991. The repairs were assessed using both ultrasound and Strickland's clinical criteria. The results are presented, and the two methods of assessment compared. A new method of grading results is proposed based on the ultrasound findings. We have demonstrated that ultrasound has an important role to play in assessing tendon repairs, both in the on-going management and as an objective method of measuring the results of repair.
