A comprehensive comparison between the characteristics of conventional electrical pumping and the new optical pumping (OP) schemes in quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOAs) has been done and has proved that the optical pumping scheme can significantly improve the dynamical properties of QD-SOAs. Analytical solutions have been presented to justify the optical properties in both pumping methods in CW operation mode. Also, pulse-mode operation has been investigated through numerically solved rate equations. Besides obviating the deficiencies of electrical pumping, optically pumped SOAs (OP-SOAs) can be attractive alternatives for high-speed all-optical signal processing.

In this work, an ultra-fast all-optical plasmon induced transparency based on a metal–insulator–metal nanoplasmonic waveguide with two Kerr nonlinear ring resonators is studied. Two-dimensional simulations utilizing the finite-difference time-domain method are used to show an obvious optical bistability and significant switching mechanisms of the signal light by varying the pump-light intensity. The proposed all-optical switching based on plasmon induced transparency demonstrates femtosecond-scale feedback time (90 fs), meaning ultra-fast switching can be achieved. The presented all-optical switch may have potential significant applications in integrated optical circuits.

Abstract-In this paper a novel method for ultra-high-resolution, compact and tunable optical displacement sensor using ring resonator and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is proposed. The introduced technique uses ring resonator as an interesting element including high quality factor. We show that the proposed sensor can easily detect well below nanometer ranges. It is shown that the proposed idea of using EIT the resolution of the sensor is so high for displacement below mm range and for ranges larger than mm the sensitivity of the proposed sensor in both EIT and traditional cases is same approximately. Also, the proposed sensor is optically tunable. So, depends on required resolution optical control field can be used to tune the sensitivity of the proposed device.
