The world has improved a lot. The vision to make people’s lives enjoyable came faithfully through the efforts of scientists in developing technologies that will help people’s work easier. This study determined the effectiveness of Activity-Based Strategy in teaching science to Grade 7 high school students in a national high school in the Philippines. The method used in this study was a quasi-experimental design with control and experimental groups. The experimental group was taught using an activity-based strategy, while the control group used the teacher-centered approach. Pretest and posttest methods were used to measure the level of academic performance of the students in both groups. This study revealed that the pretest performances of the control and experimental group were low, but the posttest of both groups increased. Also, there is a significant difference in the posttest performances of both groups in Earth Science. The study concluded that science teaching for Grade 7 students could be enhanced by using the activity-based strategy, a better alternative to improve students’ performances. Activity-based strategy in Science 7 increases the students’ motivation in terms of mastery of the concepts skills, stimulating positive learning and interest, and love for science.
This study determined the effectiveness of synectics in teaching Grade 9 science in one private high school in Mandaue City, Cebu. A quasi-experimental design using the control and experimental groups was utilized. The experimental group was taught science concepts using synectics, while the lecture method was used in teaching the control group. Pretest and posttest evaluations were utilized to measure the academic performance of both groups of students. The results of the study showed that the pretest scores of the control and experimental groups on the three topics covered were fair and that the pretest mean values for the two groups were comparable or closer with each other. It also revealed that the posttest scores of both groups marked an increase in good performance level and the posttest mean value of the group with an intervention using synectics in teaching was greatly or highly improved compared to the group taught using the lecture method. The results also showed that there was a significant difference in the pretest and posttest scores between the control and experimental groups. Using synectics in teaching science concepts is an effective technique in improving students ‘performance since it provides them with a meaningful and authentic understanding of scientific concepts by associating these concepts to real-life situations.
This study described the lived experiences of the English enthusiasts at the University of Cebu – Main Campus. The study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) through 15 BSED English Majors interviews. The analysis of data generated six themes “Actually, I am not really fond of reading books, but I’ve learned to enjoy reading love storybooks. They are very entertaining.” (Gaining Interest and Love for Reading), “The challenges that I encountered in my journey towards acquiring the love of reading are the unfamiliar words. Whenever I encountered those words, I usually pause and find their meanings.” (Dealing with Unfamiliar Words) “I addressed the challenges in positive ways. These only urge me to love reading more.” (Context and Comprehension Challenges) “I simply love reading because I can use my imagination. When I read, I feel like I’m the main character of the story.” (Attitude towards Reading) “In reading, you will experience things you haven’t experienced yet. You choose an author and a genre first before you read. In that way your interest and love of reading will be sustained but exploring is more fun.” (Personal Book Choice) “In reading, actually you discover yourself more, especially if you read different genres of books. My journey towards reading is self-discovery.” (Realizations through Reading). The study attempts to explain the different factors involved in the love of reading. These are gaining interest and love of reading, dealing with unfamiliar words, context and comprehension challenges, attitude towards reading, personal book choice, and realizations through reading. The English enthusiasts encountered some difficulties in reading various texts, passages, and other English classics. However, their enduring interest, love, and passion for reading transcend all forms of reading complexities. In contrast, some students may lack interest and motivation in reading. They tend to be superficial readers, or they just read when they are told to do so. Reading for them is dull and boring. Thus, the English enthusiasts may share their lived reading experiences with those reluctant and passive readers, and they may become more interested and motivated to read beyond the parameters of academic requirements.
The study focused on the Katipunan movement in the province of Cebu and its significance to the Philippine struggle for independence. This qualitative research utilized a historical research approach in gathering and analyzing historical evidence. The primary source of data of this study was the research informants. These informants were chosen based on their knowledge of the study. Likewise, the Cebuano Studies Center of the University of San Carlos, Cebu Historical Association Office, Patria de Cebu Archives, and the Historical Association of Cebu (HACE) Office were utilized as sources of data. Books and articles written by expert historians, as evidence of past conditions were also used as secondary sources of data. The main instrument of the study was the researcher and the key informants. However, an informal interview guide with open-ended questions was utilized to aid the researcher. This research was able to ascertain that national history is a product of local history, and that local history provides the foundation and the substance of our true national history; two, the Cebuano Katipunan was patterned after and influenced by Manila, especially in its organizational structure and objectives; third, though influenced by Manila, the Katipunan in Cebu was a struggle of the Cebuanos and some leaders from other parts of the Visayas in the name of independence of the Philippines from Spain (the credits of its victory must be given to Cebuanos and not to the Tagalogs); fourth, women contributed a lot to the success of the Cebuano uprising; fifth, the Cebuanos fought with little else but bravery; some Cebuano secular priests were not passive spectators in Cebuano uprising, and the Katipunan movement in Cebu was an integral part of the national struggle for independence in the annals of Philippine history.
The main intent of the study was to explore the experiences of first-year college students in their computer literacy subjects in their senior high school. Specifically, this study answered the following subproblems: the positive experiences of the informants in enhancing their academic performance through computers and the constraints they experienced in the implementation of the ICT curriculum during their senior high school. This study employed a qualitative method of research with the aid of an interview guide to inquire about the students’ experiences in computers during their senior high school. Twenty informants were interviewed individually. The researcher utilized an interview guide and audiotaped with the informants' consent. Thematic analysis was utilized to interpret data and identify meaningful information and organize it into themes. Based on the findings, six themes emerged: Enhanced Learning in Microsoft Office Tools, Practical Application of Knowledge, Better Job Opportunities, Inadequate Number of Computers and Slow Internet Connectivity, Ineffective Teaching Strategies, and Unqualified Teachers.
