A rare combination of dual static and dynamic fluorescence quenching mechanisms is reported, while sensing the nitroexplosive trinitrotoluene (TNT) in water by a cationic conjugated copolymer PFPy. Since the fluorophore PFPy interacts with TNT in both ground state as well as the excited states, a greater extent of interaction is facilitated between PFPy and the TNT, as a result of which the magnitude of the signal is amplified remarkably. The existence of these collective sensing mechanisms provides additional advantages to the sensing process and enhances the sensing parameters, such as LoD and highly competitive sensing processes in natural water bodies irrespective of the pH and at ambient conditions. These outcomes involving dual sensing mechanistic pathways expand the scope of developing efficient sensing probes for toxic chemical analyte and biomarker detection, preventing environmental pollution and strengthening security at sensitive locations while assisting in early diagnosis of disease biomarkers.

Metal‐free organic molecules with structurally diverse aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) behavior and new functional photophysical properties reveal unique structure–property relationships, especially bright luminescence, and have attracted extensive attention in the past few decades. Despite tremendous progress on fluorescent molecules development, the extended π‐conjugated organic AIE probes with their nanorange self‐assembly, coassembly, unique morphology, high biocompatibility, and light‐harvesting capabilities enable them as potential candidates in numerous translational application perspectives. In particular, a few important classes of AIE light up small molecules, supramolecules, oligomers, polymers, including nanoparticles and photosensitizer molecules, with their emerging properties of thermally activated delayed fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence, including emission switching stimuli‐responsive behavior and multifunctional properties, have been boosted by the rare features of aggregation at their condensed or solid states. This review highlights salient features of AIE‐based emitters, encompassing molecular design strategies, stimulating photophysical properties, mechanistic aspects, and their efficacy in various electronic and biomedical applications, broadly covering properties of small molecules to oligomers, macromolecules to polymers.

The development of planar luminogens with isoelectronic B-N moiety and replacing the conventional C=C bonds is an unusual approach to tune the optical properties of organic materials in solution and condensed phase. Herein, three boron congeners and their analogous carbon congeners are developed via engineering the aliphatic / aromatic functionality unveiling the role of each functionality on intermolecular packing and luminogenic behavior. The boron-fused molecules exhibited slip-stack packing orientation governed by B-π interactions and showed aggregation induced emission in the condensed state unlike the carbon analogs which had a typical aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) phenomena. Notably, the offset dimeric arrangement in octyl chain substituted boron congener offers highly emissive nano-assemblies and solid-state luminescence which was utilized for fluorescence-based rapid detection of broadly used tetracycline and oxytetracycline antibiotics. This detection was further translated into a prototype technique using a smartphone-based platform for easy, onsite detection. Examining the structure-property relationship could lead to the development of highly emissive unusual luminogens by restricting the detrimental π-π stacking via insertion of BN moiety into cyclic hydrocarbon framework. This promising strategy provides access to potential planar luminogens while generating unusual photophysical properties for advanced applications.
