El descubrimiento de la variabilidad genética para resistencia a salinidad y sequía en el germoplasma hexaploide nativo y cultivares de camote (2x=6x=90=BBBBBB) en poblaciones clonales tetraploides de papa (2x=4x=48=AAA), a principios de 1985, catalizó el inicio de una investigación aplicada sobre respuestas fenotípicas de las plantas tuberíferas a los estreses abióticos más comunes de las zonas áridas y salinas de potencial agrícola de la costa del Pacífico. De esta manera, se estableció el mismo año el proyecto de investigación colaborativa “Mejoramiento Genético de papa y camote para zonas Áridas y Salinas, entre la Facultad de Ciencias Agrícolas de la universidad Nacional Jorge Basadre Grohmann de Tacna (UNJBG) y el Centro Internacional de la Papa (CIP). Dentro de la estrategia genética y logística del proyecto se diseñó un programa de cruzamientos y selecciones para generar clones y familias híbridas superiores, así como progenitores de buena habilidad combinatoria, adaptados a las condiciones de aridez y salinidad de los suelos marginales de la costa del Pacífico. Este germoplasma mejorado, una vez liberado sería utilizado por los agricultores de esta zona agroecológica para la alimentación humana, como forraje y materia prima para la agroindustria. Desde aquella fecha, hasta hoy en día, se ha logrado una amplia ganancia genética y un extenso avance de selección, materializando fundamentalmente por un caudal de clones, hídricos y variedades superiores, adaptadas a las condiciones climáticas y edáficas de los suelos costeros, así como amplia resistencia de campo al nematodo del nudo de la raíz meloidogyne incógnita (RKN), importante plaga de la papa y el camote en la costa y resistencia de campo a los principales virus patógenos de la papa con la finalidad de reducir el uso de plaguicidas químicos en los campos de cultivos.
En enero de 1985, se establece el proyecto de investigación colaborativa Mejoramiento Genético de Papa y Camote para Zonas Andas y Salinas entre la Facultad de Ciencias Agrícolas de la Universidad Nacional Jorge Basadre Grohmann de Tacna y el Centro Internacional de la Papa. Dentro de la estrategia y logística del presente proyecto se diseñó un programa de cruzamientos y selecciones recurrentes para generar híbridos y clones avanzados, así como progenitores con buena habilidad combinatoria, adaptados a las condiciones agroecológicas áridas y salinas de la costa peruana. Este germoplasma autotetraploide mejorado (2n=4x=48=AAAA), introducido al sistema de cultivo in vitro para su limpieza de virus y liberación, sería utilizado por los agricultores de esta zona agroecológica para la alimentación humana y como materia prima para la agroindustria. A la fecha, se ha logrado una amplia ganancia genética y un avance de selección, materializado mayormente por un caudal de clones avanzados, familias híbridas de semilla botánica y variedades superiores, adaptadas a las condiciones climáticas y edáficas de los suelos costeros de potencial agrícola, así como una amplia resistencia de campo al nemátodo del nudo de la raíz Meloidogyne incógnita M.javanica y M. arenaria, importante plaga de la papa y una resistencia de campo a los principales virus del tubérculo, como parte de un manejo ecológico integrado, en el control de plagas y enfermedades en la costa árida peruana.
El camote (Ipomoea batatas L) es un cultivo de importancia agronómica y social por sus múltiples aplicaciones para la alimentación humana, agroindustria y como forraje para el ganado, por lo que resulta de gran interés generar nuevos genotipos superiores, que contribuyan a combatir el hambre o la desnutrición en las zonas de mayor necesidad del Tercer Mundo. En el presente trabajo de investigación se han caracterizado a clones élites y variedades mejoradas, adaptadas a las condiciones árido—salino—bóricas de la costa del Pacífico Sur de Sudamérica. El proceso se inició con una caracterización morfológica del follaje y de las raíces reservantes de los genotipos en estudio; luego, una evaluación de sus principales atributos agronómicos, su reacción frente al Virus del Moteado Plumoso del Camote (SPFMY) bajo condiciones de campo, así como su rendimiento, tolerancia al frío y resistencia a otras condiciones de estrés abiótico, cultivados en suelos árido-salino-bóricos. Finalmente, se realizó una caracterización molecular mediante la técnica del AFLP. Estos datos fueron analizados con el software NTSYS, obteniendo dendogramas en los que se demostró que todos los genotipos tienen un coeficiente de similaridad menor a 1 (uno), lo que significa que los genotipos en estudio son diferentes y distintivos, lográndose diferenciar claramente entre ellos, mostrando una gran diversidad genética interclonal. Asimismo, estos resultados brindan información que puede ser usada para los registros internacionales de patentes de clones y variedades mejoradas.
